- • The Commercial Learning & Development Director at Sumitomo Pharma America, Inc. is a strategic leadership role focused on building applied commercial capability and improving field performance through practical, role-relevant learning experiences across the client-facing organization. This role is critical to translating commercial strategy into action by equipping field leaders with the skills, decision-making abilities, and behaviors that drive measurable business impact in oncology, urology, women’s health, rare diseases, cell & gene therapies, and CNS.
- • The person will design, deliver, and continuously improve a blend of live, virtual, and experiential learning solutions that move beyond knowledge transfer to foster observable behavior change, field execution, and performance improvement aligned with enterprise leadership standards and business priorities.
- • Key day-to-day responsibilities include serving as the Commercial Learning and Development owner for field-specific application and capability development; collaborating with HR Learning & Organizational Development on strategy, design, and evolution of commercial field leader and leadership development programs; translating commercial priorities and field capability gaps into targeted, role-specific development pathways; aligning learning solutions to Commercial L&D and HR leadership frameworks; designing learning experiences that drive performance improvement and behavior change; co-creating clear learning journeys that support learners at every stage of development; building commercial leaders’ capability in business planning, financial acumen, and strategic decision-making; reinforcing enterprise mindset and cross-functional thinking through commercial decision-making and execution; maintaining a clear point of view on capability priorities such as coaching, communication, performance, business acumen, and development; leveraging innovative learning approaches, digital tools, and experiential methods; and defining and owning metrics to assess learning effectiveness and business impact.
- • Additional responsibilities involve conducting ongoing needs assessments using feedback, performance insights, and stakeholder input; defining and applying methods to evaluate program effectiveness (e.g., adoption, confidence, behavior change, performance impact); using data and qualitative insights to continuously improve learning experiences and outcomes; and leading Advanced Sales Learning & Development initiatives, account management training, commercial business acumen development, and strategic business planning capability building.
- • The Commercial Learning & Development Director will partner closely with enterprise leadership, HR, and commercial teams to ensure learning initiatives are aligned with organizational goals and contribute to field readiness and organizational growth. This role operates within a global pharmaceutical organization committed to accelerating discovery and bringing novel therapies to patients sooner, with a strong emphasis on ethical standards, compliance, and equal opportunity employment.
- • In this role, the individual will have the opportunity to shape the commercial capability of a growing pharmaceutical organization, influence leadership development at scale, and drive tangible business outcomes through innovative learning strategies. They will gain deep expertise in applied learning design, performance consulting, and change management within a complex, matrixed environment, while advancing their leadership in the life sciences industry.
🎯 Requirements
- • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred.
- • Minimum 10–15 years of relevant experience in biotech or pharmaceutical industry (without Master’s) or 8–12 years (with Master’s), including significant experience in sales leadership, sales training, and/or leadership development.
- • Must have 5+ years of field sales leadership experience.
- • Demonstrated experience leading and developing people and enabling leader performance.
- • Proven track record designing and delivering applied commercial and leader capability development programs (virtual, live, and blended).
- • Strong facilitation capability with executive presence and the ability to engage and influence field leaders.
- • Highly organized, results-driven, and comfortable managing multiple initiatives in a matrixed environment.
🏖️ Benefits
- • Base salary range of $188,800 to $236,000, with opportunity for merit-based increases and short incentive plan participation.
- • Eligibility for 401(k) plan, comprehensive medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance.
- • Robust time-off policy including unlimited paid time off, 11 paid holidays, additional shut-down period time off in late December, and 80 hours of paid sick time upon hire and annually thereafter.
