Full Job Description
📋 Description
- • As a Design Engineer at Metriport, you will play a pivotal role in shaping how healthcare organizations interact with complex patient data through intuitive, high-performance user interfaces. You will bridge the gap between design and engineering by owning the full lifecycle of UI solutions — from understanding clinical workflows and defining design systems to implementing production-ready React components. Your work directly impacts the usability and adoption of Metriport’s platform, which serves over 300 million patient records across 100+ healthcare customers, making your contributions critical to improving real-world healthcare data exchange.
- • Your day-to-day responsibilities will include building and maintaining a scalable design system that establishes consistent typography, spacing, color, and component patterns; leading frontend implementation by setting technical direction, reviewing code for design fidelity, and writing high-impact React code; engaging with users — including clinicians, administrators, and IT teams — to deeply understand their workflows and translate pain points into principled design solutions; and solving data-dense UI challenges by crafting interfaces that render large volumes of medical information efficiently, making informed tradeoffs between layout, performance, and usability while knowing when to iterate and when to ship.
- • Metriport is a tight-knit, engineering-heavy team of mostly former founders, including two YC alumni, operating with minimal bureaucracy and high autonomy. Backed by top VCs and generating multi-million ARR, the company has achieved product-market fit and is now scaling rapidly. The culture emphasizes competence over prestige, sustainable intensity, and output-driven results — founders work six days a week from the San Francisco office, but team members are trusted to craft their own schedules as long as they deliver measurable impact.
- • In this role, you will develop deep expertise in healthcare UX, data visualization, and frontend systems thinking. You’ll gain ownership over critical product decisions, sharpen your ability to balance craftsmanship with speed, and grow as a hybrid designer-engineer who can influence both product strategy and technical execution. By solving real problems for real users in a high-stakes industry, you’ll build a portfolio of work that combines aesthetic rigor with functional excellence — all while contributing to a mission that improves patient care through better data access.
🎯 Requirements
- • Design instincts: You produce Figma work that is considered and defensible — with clear opinions on typography, hierarchy, and interaction patterns.
- • Frontend fluency: You understand React well enough to lead implementation and run reviews — component architecture, rendering behavior, state management.
- • Pragmatism: You know what to polish and what to ship. You walk the tightrope between craft and speed without falling off either side.
- • The "Metriport" Mindset: Low ego, high ownership. You ask "Why can't this be done in 3 days?" instead of 3 weeks.
🏖️ Benefits
- • Competitive equity + compensation package 🚀
- • Full family Platinum health insurance, dental, and vision coverage 🦷
- • 401(k) retirement plan + matching 💰
- • Flexible work from home or in-office 🏢
- • Healthy lunches complimentary when in-office (and breakfast + dinners as needed) 🍏
- • Quarterly company off-sites with the team ⛷️
- • MacBook provided by us 💻
- • Unlimited PTO (we work hard, but trust you to take time you need to be at your best) 🧘♂️
