📋 Description
- • As Head of Engineering at Valency Inc., you will report directly to the CEO and own the technical architecture, define engineering culture, hire and grow the engineering team, and shape how the company builds and ships its AI-augmented research platform.
- • You will drive the technical roadmap, make architectural decisions balancing speed and scalability, evolve cloud-based infrastructure, anticipate scaling challenges, and establish engineering practices that scale from a small team to a full organization.
- • You will work hands-on with AI coding tools like Claude Code, make key technical decisions across backend services, data infrastructure, and developer tooling, and drive improvements in system performance, reliability, and operational cost.
- • You will collaborate closely with the Head of Science and Head of Research, align with product to translate user needs into engineering priorities, and communicate technical tradeoffs clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- • You will recruit, hire, and mentor a world-class engineering team across backend, frontend, infrastructure, and security, fostering a culture of shipping fast, continuous learning, kindness, intellectual humility, open source contribution, and AI-native development.
- • Valency is building the global hub for AI-augmented research, based in Berkeley with a hybrid model (3 days in-office, 2 days flexible remote), and is focused on advancing research at the speed of thought through agentic science infrastructure.
🎯 Requirements
- • Significant experience building and leading engineering teams at early-stage or high-growth companies
- • Genuine fluency with AI coding tools (e.g., Claude Code) used daily to solve real problems
- • Deep hands-on expertise with cloud-native architectures
- • Experience with Model Context Protocol (MCP), agentic frameworks, or AI-tool integration patterns
- • Track record of scaling and shipping production systems under real constraints
- • Ability to operate with high autonomy in fast-moving, resource-constrained environments
