📋 Description

• As a Senior Engineer I-II on the Core Workflow Engine team at n8n GmbH, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the foundational infrastructure that powers one of the world’s most popular open-source workflow automation platforms, enabling technical teams to automate complex processes with reliability and scalability across both cloud and self-hosted environments.
• Your work will directly impact product engineers and the global open-source community by improving the correctness, performance, and resilience of n8n’s execution engine and frontend platform, ensuring seamless workflow orchestration and collaboration at scale.
• You will contribute to backend platform foundations including durable workflow execution, state management, orchestration patterns, queue/task distribution, and data architecture, applying systems thinking to enhance reliability and modularity in distributed systems.
• On the frontend, you will work on core canvas architecture, real-time collaboration features (using WebSockets and CRDT-inspired approaches), and performance optimizations (such as web workers and rendering improvements) to deliver a smooth, responsive workflow-building experience.
• You will participate in technical decision-making through RFCs and collaborative discussions, advocate for best practices in code quality and system design, and support team growth via code reviews, pairing, and knowledge sharing.

🎯 Requirements

• Systems thinking mindset with a focus on correctness, trade-offs, and reliability in foundational platform problems.
• Proven system design experience, including the ability to contribute to architectural decisions and clearly explain technical choices in large, evolving codebases.
• Deep expertise in TypeScript, with strong proficiency in both backend (Node.js) and/or frontend development, comfortable working in complex, scalable systems.
• Demonstrated collaboration skills, including effective cross-functional communication, code reviews, pairing, and knowledge sharing in a remote-first environment.
• Pragmatic engineering approach, with experience improving and refactoring existing systems to enhance scalability, maintainability, and performance.
