  • • Mikva Challenge is a dynamic nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to cultivating the next generation of informed, empowered, and active citizens who are committed to building a just and equitable society. We achieve this through an innovative civic learning model that places youth voice and expertise at its core, offering transformative experiences in political campaigns, public policy advocacy, government internships, and youth activism. Our comprehensive approach involves direct engagement with young people, robust support for educators, and strategic collaboration with civic leaders and institutions. Mikva Challenge is deeply invested in unlocking the potential of youth, championing their power and ensuring their voices are heard. Our program evaluations consistently demonstrate a profound and lasting impact: 82% of students report an increase in their civic knowledge, 77% develop a stronger sense of civic agency and a heightened commitment to future civic action, 83% step into new civic leadership roles, and 79% gain valuable socio-emotional skills that often translate into academic success.
  • • We are currently seeking a passionate and driven Youth Council Coordinator to join our dedicated team. This pivotal role will provide essential administrative and programmatic support for Mikva Challenge's Citywide Youth Councils (CYC) and Youth Organizing Academy (YOA), two cornerstone initiatives designed to amplify youth influence and develop future leaders.
  • • The Citywide Youth Councils are instrumental in strengthening youth voice and leadership within Chicago's schools, city government, and electoral processes. Through our unique youth-led civic learning model, participants engage in in-depth reflection, community mapping, participatory primary research of their peers, rigorous root cause analysis, and strategic development. This process culminates in the creation of youth-led policy recommendations, the organization of impactful youth forums, and direct advocacy for youth priorities with key local decision-makers. These councils also serve as a vital conduit for a broader segment of Chicago's youth to contribute their perspectives on critical city policy decisions that directly affect them.
  • • The Youth Organizing Academy is our specialized civic workforce development program, meticulously designed to train and prepare young individuals for impactful careers with leading community organizations, labor unions, policy advocacy groups, and political campaigns. The YOA actively cultivates and maintains strong relationships with hiring partners to facilitate successful youth placements, ensuring a pipeline of skilled and passionate young organizers.
  • • As the Youth Council Coordinator, you will be instrumental in maintaining the smooth operation and logistical integrity of these vital programs across the city. Your responsibilities will include meticulous program logistics and documentation for the assigned councils, encompassing accurate attendance tracking, detailed case notes on youth interactions, monitoring leadership development progress, administering evaluations, managing social media updates, and performing other essential data entry tasks. You will also play a key role in co-facilitating engaging Council meetings and coordinating crucial research and work sessions for students outside of the regular weekly meetings.
  • • This hybrid position offers a blend of in-office work at our downtown Chicago, IL location and remote engagement, utilizing virtual platforms to connect with staff and stakeholders. You will be responsible for managing the logistics and coordination of in-person sessions, ensuring all necessary program supplies are available, and overseeing student travel and meal arrangements. A significant aspect of your role will involve implementing and supporting programming for the off-hours research that students undertake throughout the academic year. Maintaining consistent and clear communication with youth participants, their parents, and guardians regarding program participation, schedules, and other pertinent matters will be a critical function.
  • • You will take the lead on organizing recruitment and student interview efforts, establishing clear timelines and schedules for youth recruitment and hiring processes throughout the year. In partnership with the Operations team, you will spearhead the onboarding of CYC youth, ensuring a welcoming and structured introduction to the program. You will co-facilitate weekly sessions for the councils alongside Council Managers, and lead dedicated CYC office hours, facilitating goal-setting check-ins with all youth participants to foster their development and engagement.
  • • Staying informed about relevant community events for the councils to participate in will be an important aspect of your role. You will assist in facilitating communication between youth, partners, service providers, and parents to effectively evaluate situations, collaboratively solve problems, and resolve conflicts as they arise. In partnership with the Director of Data and Evaluation and Council Managers, you will guide youth in designing effective surveys, analyzing survey results, and leveraging research findings powerfully to advance their interests and achieve their goals.
  • • You will also provide support to other programs and departments as needed, including assisting with campaign trips, special events, and organizational fundraisers. Collaboration with colleagues across the organization will be essential to better support our youth participants. This role offers a unique opportunity to make a tangible impact on the lives of young people in Chicago, empowering them to become active and engaged citizens.

🎯 Requirements

  • • High school degree or GED, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • • One to three years of experience in youth programming, advocacy, government, or teaching.
  • • Experienced user of Google Workspaces, Zoom, social media platforms, and Microsoft Office products (Excel and Word).
  • • Strong public speaking and workshop facilitation skills.
  • • Ability to engage, manage, and cultivate relationships with diverse stakeholders with a varied range of perspectives.

🏖️ Benefits

  • • Competitive salary of $50,000 annually.
  • • Comprehensive benefits package including paid time off, medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • • Additional benefits such as 401K, disability, and life insurance.
  • • Opportunity to work in a hybrid model with flexibility between downtown Chicago office and remote work.
  • • Be part of a mission-driven organization making a significant impact on youth civic engagement in Chicago.
