Full Job Description

📋 Description

  • Join OpenAI as an Abuse Investigator on the Intelligence and Investigations team, a critical role dedicated to safeguarding the responsible deployment of artificial intelligence. Our mission is to ensure that general-purpose AI benefits all of humanity, and this requires a deep understanding of how our powerful tools are used in the real world. You will be at the forefront of identifying, analyzing, and disrupting malicious uses and activities on our platform, playing a pivotal role in developing data-backed product policies and building scaled safety mitigations.
  • In this dynamic and high-stakes environment, you will be responsible for detecting sophisticated threats and actors who abuse our policies and engage in other harmful behaviors. This demands an expert-level understanding of our products, a keen analytical eye for complex data, and proven experience in investigating threat actors. You will be a key responder to time-sensitive escalations, particularly those that bypass our existing automated tools and safeguards, requiring swift and decisive action.
  • This role is uniquely suited for individuals with domain-specific expertise, a background in investigating sophisticated threats, and the ability to discern subtle signals within a complex and adversarial threat landscape. You must possess a proven capacity to rapidly learn new processes, systems, and team dynamics, thriving in ambiguous, rapidly evolving, and high-pressure situations. The ability to maintain composure and effectiveness under pressure is paramount.
  • While this position is remote-friendly across the US, you are welcome to work from our San Francisco office if preferred. A critical aspect of this role involves responding to urgent escalations that may occur outside of normal working hours, necessitating flexibility and dedication. Some investigations may involve exposure to sensitive content, including material that is sexual, violent, or otherwise disturbing. A strong sense of ethical responsibility and resilience is essential for navigating these challenging aspects of the work.
  • Your core responsibilities will include:
  • Conducting in-depth investigations into user activity and disrupting abusive operations in close partnership with our policy, legal, integrity, global affairs, and security teams. This will involve extensive cross-internet and open-source intelligence (OSINT) research to uncover patterns and actors.
  • Proactively developing innovative abuse signals and tracking strategies to enhance our ability to detect harmful activity on the platform before it escalates.
  • Clearly and effectively communicating investigation findings to a diverse range of internal stakeholders, and at times, to external partners, ensuring a shared understanding of threats and mitigation efforts.
  • Cultivating a comprehensive and nuanced understanding of our products and the data they generate. You will collaborate closely with technical teams to refine our data collection, analysis capabilities, and investigative tooling.
  • Responding to and resolving urgent escalations, often under tight deadlines, requiring a calm and methodical approach to complex problems.
  • Analyzing emerging trends in online abuse, particularly those related to national security, influence operations, and the intersection of these with advanced AI technologies.
  • Contributing to the development and refinement of internal investigation playbooks and best practices.
  • Collaborating with policy teams to translate investigative insights into actionable policy recommendations and improvements.
  • Building and maintaining relationships with internal and external stakeholders relevant to abuse investigations.
  • Staying abreast of the evolving landscape of AI-driven threats and abuse vectors.
  • This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the safety and integrity of cutting-edge AI technology, directly impacting OpenAI's mission to benefit all of humanity. You will be part of a dedicated team focused on understanding and mitigating the risks associated with powerful AI systems, ensuring their development and deployment are conducted responsibly and ethically. Your work will have a tangible impact on the safety of our users and the broader public trust in AI.
