• Join Artisan, a groundbreaking YC W24 company revolutionizing the future of work by building autonomous AI employees. We are not creating simple chatbots or copilots; we are developing sophisticated digital workers capable of performing real jobs. Our flagship product, Ava, is an AI Business Development Representative (BDR) trusted by hundreds of companies. Ava excels at lead research, crafting personalized emails in a client's unique voice, executing multi-step outbound sequences, managing her own deliverability infrastructure, self-optimizing over time, and adeptly handling objections to book meetings. She is designed to be a true teammate, not just a tool.
• We are at an exciting inflection point, having raised $35M from prominent investors including Y Combinator and achieving $8M in Annual Recurring Revenue (ARR). Currently, we are intensely focused on developing Ava 2.0, a significant leap forward in AI employee capabilities. This endeavor presents immense engineering challenges and an expansive surface area for innovation.
• As the third Applied AI engineer to join our dynamic team, you will be at the forefront of pushing the boundaries of what AI employees can achieve. Your contributions will directly influence our product direction and the core intelligence powering Ava.
• Your responsibilities will span the entire lifecycle of AI model integration and application. This includes the critical task of evaluating various Large Language Models (LLMs), meticulously selecting the optimal models for specific tasks while carefully balancing crucial factors such as cost, latency, reliability, and accuracy. You will be instrumental in shaping how Ava interacts with the world and performs her duties.
• You will architect sophisticated prompt frameworks and define agent behaviors that are central to Ava's core workflows. This encompasses her ability to generate compelling email copy, engage in natural chat interactions, seamlessly schedule meetings, conduct thorough prospect research, and much more. The quality and effectiveness of these frameworks will directly impact Ava's performance and user satisfaction.
• A significant part of your role will involve optimizing complex, multi-step agent chains. You will leverage advanced techniques such as Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), integrate web search capabilities, and implement effective tool usage, connecting Ava with essential systems like CRMs, calendars, and various APIs to enhance her operational efficiency and data access.
• You will play a pivotal role in driving key infrastructure choices related to routing, orchestration, the development of robust evaluation loops, and the implementation of persistent memory mechanisms across our suite of agents. Ensuring seamless communication and data flow between different AI components is paramount.
• Building safety, trust, and robust controls into our AI agents is a top priority. You will collaborate closely with the product team to design user-friendly guardrails, implement fail-safe mechanisms, and define clear success metrics that ensure Ava operates ethically and effectively.
• We encourage exploration and the deployment of emerging AI modalities. You will investigate and integrate advancements in areas such as voice AI and talking head technology, as well as multi-modal reasoning, to continuously enhance Ava's human-like qualities and interaction capabilities.
• A core aspect of your work will be designing agent workflows that enable strategic decision-making, real-time self-optimization, and autonomous adaptation to deliver measurable outcomes. This involves creating AI systems that can learn and improve independently.

🎯 Requirements

• 2+ years of experience shipping real AI products in production, either at an application-layer AI startup or on a foundation model team.
• Deep hands-on experience with AI agents, function calling, RAG pipelines, or self-healing workflows (e.g., LangChain, ReAct, Dust, OpenAI Tools).
• Strong background in prompt design, agent chaining, and retrieval systems. Experience with OpenAI's RAG, web search tools, or equivalents is a significant plus.
• Proven ability to own and manage the latency, reliability, and cost of LLM-powered systems in a production environment.
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts clearly and concisely.
