Full Job Description
📋 Description
- • Join PermitFlow Inc., a pioneering applied AI company revolutionizing the construction industry by tackling one of its most significant challenges: understanding the complex web of regulations, permits, and zoning laws that govern what can be built, where, and how. As an Applied Machine Learning Engineer, you will be instrumental in developing and deploying the core ML foundation that powers our innovative AI agent workforce. This role offers a unique opportunity to work at the forefront of AI development, applying cutting-edge techniques to real-world problems that accelerate housing, clean-energy, and infrastructure development across the nation.
- • Our mission is to bring unprecedented speed, accuracy, and visibility to the $1.6 trillion construction sector, which has historically been plagued by massive delays, capital waste, and lost opportunities. PermitFlow has already demonstrated significant impact, helping contractors reduce compliance time, de-risk projects, and scale their operations with confidence, contributing to over $20 billion in development. By joining us, you will be building the AI infrastructure essential for the next wave of reindustrialization, supporting projects in data centers, factories, housing, and renewables.
- • In this role, you will be responsible for the end-to-end machine learning lifecycle. This includes designing, prototyping, and deploying intelligent systems capable of processing vast amounts of documents, extracting critical insights, and powering autonomous permitting workflows. You will have the autonomy to research new models, engineer robust data pipelines, and integrate these models into production systems that directly impact our AI agents' capabilities.
- • Key responsibilities will involve designing, implementing, and optimizing Large Language Model (LLM)-powered models specifically tailored for document processing, precise data extraction, and the automation of complex permit workflows. This includes leveraging state-of-the-art techniques to understand and interpret diverse regulatory documents.
- • You will develop and refine retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipelines, alongside sophisticated search and retrieval systems, to effectively manage and query extensive databases of jurisdictional and regulatory information. This ensures our AI agents have access to the most accurate and relevant data.
- • A significant part of your work will be the rapid prototyping, fine-tuning, and rigorous evaluation of pre-trained models for a variety of real-world Natural Language Processing (NLP) tasks. This includes, but is not limited to, text classification, named entity recognition (NER), and text summarization, all crucial for understanding construction-related documentation.
- • You will be instrumental in building scalable ML infrastructure and backend services. This involves seamlessly integrating your developed models into our production systems, ensuring they reliably power the AI agents that our clients depend on for their critical projects.
- • Working with large, diverse datasets, both structured and unstructured, will be essential. Your efforts will focus on improving data indexing, enhancing retrieval accuracy, and ensuring the contextual relevance of the information processed by our models.
- • You will own the complete ML lifecycle for your projects, from initial experimentation and model development through to deployment, continuous monitoring, performance evaluation, and iterative improvements. This end-to-end ownership is key to our agile development process.
- • A critical aspect of this role is the ability to strategically balance different AI approaches. You will need to judiciously combine ML techniques, advanced retrieval methods, and rule-based systems to deliver AI features that are not only reliable and maintainable but also deliver significant, measurable impact.
- • Collaboration is central to our success. You will work closely with cross-functional teams, including engineering, product management, and domain experts. Together, you will shape and deliver innovative ML-powered solutions that address the intricate challenges faced in the pre-construction phase of development projects.
- • This role is perfect for an individual who thrives in a fast-paced startup environment, possesses a strong sense of ownership, and enjoys the autonomy to drive projects from conception to completion. You will be contributing to a company that has secured over $90 million in funding, including a recent Series B round, from top-tier investors, demonstrating strong market validation and growth potential.
- • As part of our commitment to fostering innovation, you will have the opportunity to work with advanced AI technologies and contribute to building the future of construction technology. Your work will directly influence the efficiency and success of major development projects across the United States, making a tangible impact on the built environment.
🎯 Requirements
- • 5+ years of experience in machine learning engineering, with a proven track record of deploying and managing ML models in production environments.
- • Deep expertise in Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Large Language Models (LLMs), including hands-on experience with models like OpenAI GPT, Claude, and various Hugging Face models.
- • Experience building and optimizing retrieval and vector search systems, utilizing technologies such as FAISS, Elasticsearch, Pinecone, or Weaviate.
- • Proficiency in Python and core ML frameworks like PyTorch or TensorFlow.
- • Strong system design and architectural thinking capabilities, with a demonstrated ability to ship and iterate quickly in a dynamic setting.
🏖️ Benefits
- • Competitive salary and meaningful equity in a high-growth, venture-backed company.
- • Comprehensive health benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision coverage.
- • Generous Paid Time Off (PTO) and paid family leave policies.
- • Stipend for home office setup and equipment.
- • Hybrid work model in our New York City office (3 days in-office per week) with direct access to leadership and a collaborative environment.
- • Daily in-office lunch and dinner provided.
