- • The New York Times is seeking a dynamic and experienced Assistant Editor to join its esteemed Metro desk. This pivotal role is designed for a creative and highly skilled editor who thrives on shaping impactful journalism and nurturing the talent of reporters. You will be instrumental in guiding the Metro desk's coverage, with a particular focus on overseeing a team of reporters and their compelling enterprise and feature stories.
- • Your primary responsibility will be to elevate the quality and impact of the Metro desk's journalism. This involves meticulously selecting, assigning, and editing a diverse range of stories, from in-depth enterprise pieces and engaging features to critical breaking news. You will also be tasked with overseeing specific lines of coverage for ongoing, significant stories that resonate with our New York audience.
- • A key aspect of this role is your ability to foster a collaborative and inclusive environment where reporters feel empowered to do their best work. You will act as a mentor and guide, helping writers develop their craft, refine their storytelling, and achieve their full potential. Your editorial guidance will ensure that stories are not only accurate and well-reported but also possess a captivating narrative, a strong command of tone, and impeccable pacing and structure.
- • We are looking for an editor with a keen eye for narrative possibilities, capable of seeing the potential in stories of varying lengths and complexities. You should possess a deep understanding of journalistic ethics and standards, coupled with exceptional news judgment. Your ability to handle sensitive and powerful stories with nuance, curiosity, and a commitment to truth will be paramount.
- • This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to journalism that matters. You will collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary team, including photojournalists, data visualization experts, graphics artists, and video and audio producers, to create high-impact digital stories that engage and inform our readers across multiple platforms. Your vision will help translate complex issues into accessible and compelling narratives.
- • You will be a vital source of story ideas, not only for your direct reports but for the entire Metro desk. This requires a proactive approach to identifying emerging trends, uncovering overlooked stories, and understanding the pulse of New York City. Your creativity and journalistic instincts will drive the desk's agenda and ensure our coverage remains relevant, insightful, and essential.
- • The Assistant Editor will play a crucial role in the strategic direction of the Metro desk, contributing to editorial planning and ensuring alignment with The New York Times' overarching mission: to seek the truth and help people understand the world. This includes a steadfast commitment to journalistic independence and the pursuit of rigorous, high-quality reporting.
- • This position is based in our New York City office, requiring regular in-office attendance four days per week, with potential flexibility for remote work in accordance with departmental guidelines. You will report directly to the Metro Head Editor, working closely with them to achieve the desk's objectives.
- • The ideal candidate will demonstrate a passion for non-traditional forms of journalism and a willingness to experiment with new storytelling approaches and technologies. You should be adept at managing multiple projects simultaneously, maintaining a high level of accuracy and attention to detail under pressure, and adapting to the fast-paced nature of news.
- • Ultimately, this role is about more than just editing; it's about leading, inspiring, and contributing to a newsroom that is dedicated to producing journalism of unparalleled quality and impact. You will be a guardian of our standards, a champion for our reporters, and a key architect of stories that shape public understanding.
