📋 Description

• Lead a team of 4 Senior Backend Engineers responsible for the architecture, scalability, and reliability of Wizz, a social chat app with over 3 million monthly active users in the US and UK.
• Own and evolve the backend architecture to support high-traffic, distributed systems serving millions of daily interactions while ensuring system performance and uptime.
• Collaborate directly with product teams to shape product vision and influence technical decisions, ensuring backend capabilities align with user safety, engagement, and growth goals.
• Design, implement, deploy, and maintain scalable backend services using Node.js, Fastify, and Go, with a focus on real-time communication via Socket.io.
• Integrate and manage third-party services including analytics, content moderation tools, cloud storage (S3), and cloud-based messaging (Pub/Sub) to enhance user experience and platform security.
• Define and enforce best practices in observability, reliability, and infrastructure management across microservices deployed on Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
• Improve system scalability and resilience, particularly for high-concurrency scenarios, by optimizing database queries, caching strategies (Redis), and API design.
• Manage infrastructure using Cloud Run, BigQuery, CloudFront, Docker, and CLI tools (AWS CLI, gcloud CLI), ensuring efficient deployment pipelines via GitHub Actions.
• Contribute to the evolution of backend infrastructure to enable rapid product iteration while maintaining a safe, compliant, and pressure-free environment for young users.
• Promote engineering excellence through code reviews, documentation, and mentorship, fostering a culture of ownership and technical curiosity within the backend team.
• Ensure backend systems support critical features such as user authentication, real-time messaging, content moderation, and data privacy compliance.
• Work within a tech stack including MongoDB, Redis, Firebase, and microservices architecture to deliver robust, low-latency services for a global user base.
• Participate in on-call rotations and incident response to maintain system reliability and minimize downtime for a 24/7 global application.
• Stay current with industry trends in social app development, backend scalability, and user safety technologies to inform strategic technical decisions.
• Balance rapid feature development with long-term architectural health, ensuring systems can scale sustainably as user growth continues.

🎯 Requirements

• 5+ years of professional backend programming experience
• Fluency in French
• Expertise in Node.js (vanilla) and experience with Fastify, Socket.io, and Go
• Proven experience building and scaling high-traffic distributed systems
• Professional expertise in GCP or AWS
• Experience designing and maintaining APIs for consumer-facing applications
