📋 Description

• The Cloud Engineer III (API Gateway) role at Availity is a senior-level, hands-on position focused on supporting and evolving the production Tyk Gateway platform, directly contributing to the stability, automation, and integration of critical healthcare technology infrastructure that enables secure, scalable communication between over 2 million providers and health plans processing 13 billion transactions annually.
• Day-to-day responsibilities include implementing, operating, and improving the Tyk API Gateway; diagnosing and resolving complex gateway issues through root cause analysis; authoring and maintaining Terraform-based infrastructure-as-code; developing gateway policies for routing, authentication, rate limiting, and traffic governance; producing technical documentation and runbooks; participating in on-call rotations; and collaborating with cross-functional teams including Cloud Tenant Engineering, Network, Security, and Product to align gateway capabilities with business needs.

• In this role, you will deepen your expertise in API gateway platforms, cloud infrastructure (AWS), infrastructure-as-code (Terraform), and production system reliability while gaining exposure to regulated healthcare environments and contributing to architectural evolution under senior guidance, positioning you for greater ownership of platform strategy and design over time.

🎯 Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field
• 5+ years’ experience as a Cloud Engineer or Platform Engineer supporting production systems
• Hands-on experience with API gateways or reverse-proxy technologies (e.g., Tyk, Kong, NGINX, AWS API Gateway)
• Strong working knowledge of AWS fundamentals including networking, load balancing, IAM, and observability tools
• Practical experience with Terraform or other infrastructure-as-code tools
• Proven ability to debug complex technical issues, conduct root cause analysis, and deliver durable fixes
• Experience writing clear technical documentation, runbooks, or operational guides
• Comfort working across team boundaries to support shared platforms used by many downstream consumers
