  • • Join OpenAI's pioneering Legal team and play a pivotal role in navigating the complex and evolving landscape of artificial intelligence law. As a Counsel, Privacy, you will be at the forefront of shaping legal strategies for cutting-edge AI products, models, and technologies, contributing to OpenAI's mission of ensuring that general-purpose artificial intelligence benefits all of humanity.
  • • This is a unique opportunity to engage directly with the most innovative legal and AI challenges of our time. You will work closely with and provide essential support to OpenAI's research, product, engineering, privacy, and security teams, ensuring that our groundbreaking AI advancements are developed and released responsibly and in compliance with all relevant legal frameworks.
  • • Your primary responsibility will be to anticipate and proactively address a wide spectrum of legal risks, including those related to privacy, regulatory compliance, product development, and other emerging areas. This involves not just reacting to issues but developing forward-thinking strategies that creatively solve complex legal problems.
  • • You will be instrumental in building and refining processes that enable our privacy program to scale effectively as the company experiences rapid growth. This includes developing robust, flexible, and efficient systems for managing legal and privacy risks across a dynamic organization.
  • • A key aspect of this role involves becoming a recognized expert in AI privacy matters. You will contribute to shaping OpenAI's legal policy positions, proposing innovative approaches, and advocating for responsible AI development and deployment on a global scale.
  • • The role demands a strategic mindset, enabling you to provide expert privacy counsel on complex and emerging technologies within a fast-paced, high-growth environment. You will be expected to offer insightful guidance that balances innovation with robust risk mitigation.
  • • You will foster a culture of collaboration, working effectively across diverse, cross-functional teams. Your ability to communicate complex legal concepts clearly and concisely to a variety of audiences, including technical teams, leadership, and external stakeholders, will be crucial for success.
  • • Staying ahead of the curve is paramount. You will continuously monitor and adapt to the rapidly evolving global regulatory landscape, ensuring OpenAI remains compliant and a leader in responsible AI practices.
  • • This position offers the chance to work on truly novel legal issues, where established precedents may be scarce. You will have the autonomy and support to develop creative solutions and influence the direction of AI law.
  • • You will contribute to the development of internal policies and guidelines that govern the ethical and legal aspects of AI research and deployment, ensuring that safety and human needs remain at the core of our mission.
  • • The role requires a deep understanding of data privacy principles, international data transfer mechanisms, and the specific privacy challenges posed by AI technologies, such as data minimization, consent management, and algorithmic transparency.
  • • You will collaborate with product teams to conduct privacy impact assessments (PIAs) and data protection impact assessments (DPIAs) for new features and products, identifying and mitigating potential privacy risks before launch.
  • • You will also engage with external stakeholders, including regulators, industry groups, and policymakers, to represent OpenAI's interests and contribute to the broader conversation around AI governance and privacy.
  • • This is an exceptional opportunity to make a significant impact on the future of AI and its responsible integration into society, working alongside some of the brightest minds in the field.
  • • You will be part of a legal team that is not only reactive but proactive, shaping the legal framework for AI rather than simply responding to it.
  • • The hybrid work model in San Francisco allows for a balance of in-office collaboration and remote flexibility, fostering a productive and engaging work environment.
  • • You will be empowered to take ownership of your work, demonstrating a strong sense of initiative and a passion for technology and continuous learning.
  • • Your sound judgment in ambiguous situations will be highly valued, as you navigate uncharted legal territories.
  • • This role is ideal for a legal professional who thrives on intellectual challenges and is eager to contribute to a mission-driven organization at the cutting edge of technological innovation.
