Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • The CPU Storage Tech Lead will define and drive the server compute and storage architecture strategy for OpenAI's Stargate infrastructure, which powers large-scale AI systems through next-generation data centers optimized for dense compute clusters and advanced networking.
- • Day to day, the role involves owning technical direction across CPU platforms, memory configurations, local and disaggregated storage systems, evaluating vendor roadmaps, leading platform tradeoff decisions, and ensuring compute and storage systems are optimized for training, inference, and supporting services while working cross-functionally with hardware engineering, performance modeling, networking, supply chain, deployment teams, and external partners like AMD, Intel, OEMs, ODMs, and storage vendors.
- • The Stargate team builds the physical infrastructure for large-scale AI systems, partnering across silicon vendors, server and storage OEMs, networking teams, and data center engineering organizations to bring new capacity online quickly, reliably, and at global scale, operating at the intersection of hardware engineering, systems architecture, and infrastructure execution.
- • In this role, the person will learn to translate cutting-edge compute roadmaps into scalable, production-ready environments, drive long-range infrastructure decisions, gain deep expertise in CPU and storage architecture for AI workloads, and influence executive stakeholders while operating at the component level in a fast-moving, ambiguous environment with high ownership.
🎯 Requirements
- • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical field; advanced degree preferred.
- • 10+ years of experience in server hardware, systems architecture, data center infrastructure, or hyperscale compute platforms.
- • Deep expertise in modern CPU architectures (x86, ARM, accelerator host systems) and server platform design.
- • Strong understanding of memory systems, PCIe/CXL fabrics, NUMA behavior, and platform-level performance constraints.
- • Experience with storage systems including NVMe, SSD qualification, RAID, distributed storage, object/file systems, or high-performance data pipelines.
- • Experience evaluating hardware tradeoffs across performance, cost, power, thermals, and supply availability.
🏖️ Benefits
- • Opportunity to work on cutting-edge AI infrastructure at OpenAI, shaping the future of large-scale AI systems.
- • Collaboration with top-tier technology partners including AMD, Intel, OEMs, ODMs, and storage vendors.
- • Exposure to hyperscale data center design and AI-optimized hardware ecosystems.
- • Ability to influence long-term infrastructure strategy and executive decision-making.
- • Work in a mission-driven organization committed to ensuring AI benefits all of humanity.
