Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • As a Data Scientist in Underwriting at Parafin, you will directly influence the company’s ability to expand fair and automated access to financial services for small businesses by building and improving the core models that determine lending eligibility, sizing, and pricing.
- • You will own the full data science lifecycle — from research and model development to deployment and monitoring — working on high-impact projects such as training quantile regression models for revenue forecasting, leveraging LLMs for risk modeling using banking transaction data, and optimizing risk-based pricing through experimentation.
- • You will collaborate closely with engineering, product, and risk teams to design scalable, real-time underwriting systems and simulation platforms that evaluate conversion and risk exposure across product configurations, ensuring decisions are both scientifically rigorous and business-aligned.
- • Parafin’s underwriting team is composed of deep technical talent from elite institutions and companies (e.g., Robinhood, Uber, Airbnb, Google), fostering a culture of first-principles thinking, intellectual honesty, and craftsmanship where your work will be both challenged and amplified.
- • In this role, you will develop expertise in financial risk modeling, causal inference, and production ML systems while gaining exposure to capital markets, compliance, and partner integrations — positioning you to grow into a technical leader shaping the future of embedded finance for SMBs.
🎯 Requirements
- • Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in a quantitative field such as Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Physics, Engineering, or Computer Science, or equivalent professional experience
- • Proven experience designing, training, and deploying machine learning models in production, with strong skills in statistical modeling, regression techniques, and causal inference
- • Proficiency in Python and experience with ML libraries (e.g., scikit-learn, PyTorch, TensorFlow), SQL, and version control (Git); familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS/GCP) and MLops practices is a plus
- • Strong business acumen: ability to translate abstract problems into data-driven solutions and understand the financial impact of modeling decisions on risk, revenue, and compliance
- • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with a track record of working effectively across engineering, product, and risk teams to deliver impact
- • Demonstrated ability to write clean, tested, and maintainable code, and to prioritize high-impact work with rigor and urgency
🏖️ Benefits
- • Competitive salary range of $190k–$230k (senior level: $240k–$300k) plus equity grant
- • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance
