Full Job Description

đź“‹ Description

  • • Design and implement end-to-end features for Ashby’s talent acquisition platform, combining visual design, UI/UX, and full-stack engineering to deliver high-impact user experiences.
  • • Redesign and enhance the in-house design system to ensure consistency, scalability, and reusability across the product, enabling other engineers to build beautiful interfaces with minimal friction.
  • • Collaborate directly with recruiters, hiring managers, and product teams to understand real-world pain points in talent acquisition and translate them into functional, intuitive design solutions.
  • • Ship features to over 100,000 weekly active users and millions of candidates per week, iterating rapidly based on direct feedback from internal users and external customers like Notion, Linear, Shopify, and Snowflake.
  • • Lead the full lifecycle of product initiatives—from wireframing and prototyping to coding, testing, and deploying—without relying on traditional product management processes.
  • • Consult with Product Engineers to improve information hierarchy, scannability, and visual clarity in their designs, particularly for complex interfaces like candidate assessment views.
  • • Build flexible, composable UI components that power setup wizards and other critical workflows, reducing duplication and increasing design system adoption across the engineering team.
  • • Work on mobile web experiences, optimizing for performance and usability on diverse devices and network conditions, informed by direct user behavior and feedback.
  • • Drive innovation by combining design intuition with technical feasibility, allowing your understanding of data models and backend constraints to inform UI decisions and vice versa.
  • • Participate in customer issue investigations and support tasks distributed across the engineering team, ensuring design quality remains consistent even in reactive, high-priority scenarios.
  • • Avoid perfectionism; prioritize shipping iterative improvements over fully polished prototypes, using real user data to guide refinement rather than speculative design.
  • • Contribute to developer tooling, CI/CD pipelines, and internal AI-powered systems that accelerate feature development and code review processes.
  • • Maintain a minimal meeting schedule (<2 hours/week) while practicing deliberate, written communication to ensure alignment without disrupting deep focus time.
  • • Work on a product built to elevate talent acquisition teams, automating manual processes like interview scheduling, interviewer load balancing, and candidate tracking.
  • • Engage in pair programming, collaborative design system specification writing, and live design reviews during interviews and onboarding.
  • • Onboard rapidly: set up your dev environment with a single script, push your first product change on day one, and progressively take ownership of increasingly complex features.
  • • Receive 30-, 60-, and 90-day feedback sessions with your manager to calibrate on expectations, collaboration style, and impact.
  • • Work with a tech stack centered on TypeScript (frontend and backend), React, GraphQL, Node.js, Postgres, and Redis, with strong proficiency in frontend technologies expected.
  • • Contribute to a culture that values autonomy, ownership, and kindness, where engineers lead projects end-to-end without rigid process constraints.

🎯 Requirements

  • • Proven experience in both visual/UI design and software engineering, with a portfolio demonstrating shipped products or features to real users.
  • • Proficiency in TypeScript, React, and CSS; backend experience with Node.js, GraphQL, or Postgres is a strong plus.
  • • Demonstrated ability to design and implement features end-to-end, from wireframes to production deployment, without relying on separate design or engineering teams.
  • • Strong visual taste and execution in UI/UX, with a track record of improving design quality and consistency across a product.
  • • Comfort working in a low-process, high-autonomy environment where engineers own project direction and communication.
  • • Experience iterating on designs based on real user feedback, not just research or hypothetical scenarios.

🏖️ Benefits

  • • Competitive salary and equity with a 10-year exercise window for stock options.
  • • Unlimited PTO with encouragement to take time off.
  • • 12+ weeks of fully paid parental leave, aligned with regional requirements outside the US.
  • • Generous equipment, software, and office furniture budget.
  • • $100/month education budget, with manager-approved coverage for conferences and higher-cost learning.
  • • Full coverage of top-tier health insurance for employees and dependents, regardless of location.
