Full Job Description

đź“‹ Description

  • • Design and implement end-to-end features for Ashby’s product, combining visual design, UI/UX, and technical execution with equal proficiency in both disciplines.
  • • Redesign and enhance the in-house design system to ensure consistency, scalability, and ease of use across the product, enabling other engineers to build beautiful interfaces efficiently.
  • • Collaborate directly with Product Engineers to improve information hierarchy, scannability, and usability of interfaces—such as candidate assessment views—based on real user feedback and business needs.
  • • Work on high-impact projects that serve over 100,000 weekly active users and millions of candidates per week, with direct exposure to customers like Notion, Linear, Shopify, and Snowflake.
  • • Ship features rapidly by prototyping, iterating, and gathering feedback from internal teams and users within hours or days of release, rather than waiting for perfect specifications.
  • • Own the full lifecycle of product initiatives: from researching customer problems and writing product specs, to wireframing, designing, and implementing solutions without reliance on traditional product or design process crutches.
  • • Consult on bespoke design challenges across the engineering team, providing design guidance and technical implementation support to Product Engineers who lack design bandwidth.
  • • Build flexible, composable UI components that enable rapid development of complex workflows such as setup wizards, scheduling flows, and candidate evaluation interfaces.
  • • Improve the mobile web experience by conducting user interviews, wireframing new flows, and implementing those designs directly in code with the design system.
  • • Participate in customer issue investigations and support tasks distributed across the engineering team, ensuring all engineers contribute to product reliability and user satisfaction.
  • • Contribute to Ashby’s AI-powered tooling ecosystem by using internal tools that auto-triage issues, suggest fixes, prototype ideas, generate production-ready code, and conduct code reviews.
  • • Work in a minimal-process environment where engineers drive project direction, make product decisions, and communicate outcomes deliberately without excessive meetings or bureaucracy.
  • • Maintain a focus on visual design excellence, setting the standard for aesthetics and usability across the entire application.
  • • Ship your first product change on day one, with onboarding guided by a peer pair, incremental scope expansion, and structured 30/60/90-day feedback cycles.
  • • Engage in pair programming, collaborative design system specification writing, and live design/technical interviews during the hiring process—no LeetCode or whiteboard tests.
  • • Leverage Ashby’s tech stack: TypeScript (frontend and backend), React, GraphQL API, Node.js, Postgres, and Redis to build performant, scalable features.
  • • Contribute to a culture of diversity and inclusion, where 25% of engineers and 50% of engineering leaders are from underrepresented groups, and hiring practices eliminate bias (e.g., no LeetCode interviews).
  • • Receive unlimited PTO with active encouragement to take time off, and enjoy a generous equipment, software, and office furniture budget to optimize your productivity and comfort.
  • • Access a $100/month education budget for learning resources, with manager approval available for larger expenses like conferences.
  • • Participate in at least two in-person team gatherings annually, with a small budget provided to meet colleagues locally.

🎯 Requirements

  • • Proven experience in both visual/UI design and software engineering, with a portfolio showcasing shipped products or features that demonstrate excellence in both disciplines.
  • • Minimum 2+ years of continuous industry experience as a designer or engineer (internships do not count); must have designed and coded for products used by hundreds of users.
  • • Strong proficiency in TypeScript, React, and CSS; backend experience with Node.js, GraphQL, or Postgres is a plus.
  • • Ability to ship fast, iterate based on user feedback, and embrace imperfection in early versions to accelerate learning and product evolution.
  • • Self-driven ownership of projects—from problem definition to implementation—without reliance on rigid process or product management handoffs.
  • • Excellent visual design taste and execution skills, with a track record of improving product aesthetics and usability.

🏖️ Benefits

  • • Competitive salary and equity with a 10-year window to exercise stock options.
  • • Unlimited PTO with active encouragement to take time off.
  • • 12+ weeks of fully paid parental leave, aligned with regional requirements outside the US.
  • • Full coverage of top-tier health insurance for you and your dependents (US) or high-quality supplemental insurance globally.
  • • $100/month education budget and reimbursement for conferences with manager approval.
  • • Generous equipment, software, and office furniture budget to create your ideal workspace.
