📋 Description

• As Director of Translational Machine Learning at Iambic Therapeutics, you will serve as the critical bridge between cutting-edge machine learning capabilities and the urgent scientific questions driving clinical and near-clinical drug discovery programs, directly impacting how AI accelerates the development of life-saving medicines.
• You will shape and scale a translational ML function that applies modern ML across omics, imaging, and other biomedical data modalities to inform patient population selection, drug candidate prioritization, and biomarker discovery, ensuring ML insights are actionable for drug development decision-makers.
• Day to day, you will define and execute a translational ML strategy in close partnership with translational biology, clinical, and ML leadership, aligning technical efforts with the company’s drug discovery goals.
• You will personally drive technical work including experimental design, model development, analysis, and interpretation of translational ML outputs to support active drug programs, maintaining hands-on engagement with complex biomedical data.
• You will manage and grow a small team of ML scientists (initially 2–3) focused on imaging and omics applications, providing mentorship, setting priorities, and hiring for emerging needs as the function scales.
• You will translate clinical and translational biology questions into well-posed ML problems and reverse-translate ML results into clear, actionable recommendations for drug discovery teams, ensuring bidirectional understanding between technical and scientific stakeholders.
• You will serve as a strategic voice in the development roadmap for Enchant, Iambic’s multimodal transformer model, feeding back translational use cases and data requirements to shape model evolution and priorities.
• You will co-design experiments and data collection strategies with translational biology colleagues to maximize the utility of biomedical datasets for ML modeling, ensuring data is fit-for-purpose and biologically meaningful.
• You will establish rigorous evaluation frameworks that connect ML model performance to clinically relevant endpoints and decision criteria, enabling evidence-based go/no-go decisions in drug development.
• You will communicate translational ML results, progress, and strategy to internal stakeholders, external partners, and scientific audiences at conferences, positioning Iambic as a leader in AI-driven drug discovery.

🎯 Requirements

• PhD in machine learning, computational biology, bioinformatics, or a related computational STEM field
• Demonstrated expertise applying ML methods to biomedical or translational problems, including hands-on experience with omics data and biomedical imaging modalities
• Industry experience in drug discovery or pharmaceutical R&D, with exposure to translational workflows such as biomarker discovery, patient stratification, or drug candidate selection
• Ability to grapple with conceptual complexities of experimental design across diverse biological data types
• Strong communication skills and a track record of working effectively across ML and biology/chemistry teams
• Experience managing or building small technical teams
