Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • Join Western Digital’s Early Career Talent program as a Development Engineer and become part of a global team that is redefining the future of data storage and memory solutions. You will work on cutting-edge technologies that enable the world’s largest cloud providers, OEMs, and data-center operators to store, protect, and unlock the value of their data.
- • From day one you will be embedded in a cross-functional product-development squad that owns the full life-cycle of next-generation SSD, HDD, and flash-based solutions. You will contribute real code, real designs, and real test plans that ship to millions of devices worldwide.
- • You will collaborate with silicon design teams, firmware architects, mechanical engineers, and data-science groups to translate customer requirements into robust, high-performance storage products. Your insights will directly influence product road-maps and help Western Digital maintain its leadership in areal density, power efficiency, and reliability.
- • Expect to dive deep into storage protocols (NVMe, SATA, SAS), error-correction algorithms (LDPC, ECC), and signal-processing techniques while leveraging modern CI/CD pipelines, automated test frameworks, and cloud-scale simulation environments.
- • You will own discrete feature modules—such as wear-leveling algorithms, thermal-throttling logic, or host-interface optimization—and shepherd them from whiteboard concept through design review, implementation, validation, and mass-production ramp. Each deliverable is an opportunity to leave a measurable fingerprint on product performance and customer satisfaction.
- • Mentorship is built into the program: you will be paired with a senior engineer who will guide you through code reviews, architecture decisions, and career planning. Quarterly hack-weeks and innovation sprints give you space to pitch bold ideas directly to VPs and distinguished engineers.
- • You will analyze telemetry from millions of drives in the field to identify failure trends, performance outliers, and opportunities for firmware or hardware improvements. Your data-driven recommendations will feed directly into reliability road-maps and cost-reduction initiatives.
- • Continuous learning is expected and rewarded. You will have access to on-site and virtual courses on advanced NAND flash physics, machine-learning for predictive maintenance, and secure-coding practices. Many Early Career engineers publish papers and file patents within their first two years.
- • You will participate in customer-facing design reviews and joint debug sessions with major hyperscalers, gaining exposure to real-world workloads and learning how storage solutions are qualified at massive scale.
- • By the end of the 24-month rotational program you will have shipped multiple firmware releases, contributed to at least one patent disclosure, and built a network of mentors and collaborators across Western Digital’s global engineering sites (US, India, Israel, Malaysia, and Japan).
🎯 Requirements
- • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field earned within the last 24 months
- • Demonstrated experience (coursework, internships, co-ops, or personal projects) in C/C++ or Python for embedded or systems-level programming
- • Solid understanding of data structures, algorithms, and operating-system fundamentals
- • Nice-to-have: exposure to storage protocols (NVMe, SATA, SCSI), signal processing, or hardware-debug tools (logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, JTAG)
🏖️ Benefits
- • Fully remote-first role with flexible hours and quarterly travel stipends for team on-sites
- • Annual professional-development budget of $3,500 for conferences, certifications, or advanced degrees
- • Comprehensive medical, dental, vision, and mental-health coverage starting day one
- • Patent-incentive program that awards cash bonuses for every filed invention disclosure
