Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • Lead a cross-functional team of senior data, infrastructure, and backend engineers responsible for Statista’s Data and Content Delivery domain, which serves as the single source of truth for the company’s data platform and Data-as-a-Service business.
- • Collaborate closely with Product Managers, Data Production teams, and internal engineering stakeholders to define, align on, and deliver a clear roadmap for metadata standards, taxonomy requirements, and data format specifications.
- • Drive the migration from legacy, bespoke data pipelines to a governed, central data distribution layer that ensures scalability, reliability, and cost-efficiency across the organization.
- • Own end-to-end data integrity and discoverability by establishing monitoring across the full data value chain and maintaining a continuously updated Data Catalogue that resolves terminology conflicts between product and data teams.
- • Build and maintain strong relationships with internal stakeholders, including data engineers and architects, to develop scalable internal APIs and interfaces aligned with the Discovery & Usage and API & Ecosystems clusters.
- • Support the team in architectural and technical decision-making without being expected to contribute code regularly, focusing instead on team empowerment, alignment, and delivery.
- • Implement data governance practices including schema versioning, data contracts, and schema registry patterns to ensure consistent, trustworthy data delivery across the organization.
- • Design and oversee event-driven, fan-out distribution systems using Kafka, Redpanda, or Confluent to enable scalable data delivery across internal platforms.
- • Ensure the team’s solutions are built on AWS infrastructure with a strong understanding of distributed systems and microservice architectures.
- • Foster a supportive team environment that enables engineers to grow, innovate, and deliver high-quality, scalable solutions while reducing technical debt and workaround dependencies.
- • Partner with data engineers to standardize data delivery interfaces and eliminate fragmented, ad-hoc solutions that currently hinder data accessibility and reliability.
- • Maintain alignment with global engineering teams across Hamburg, Berlin, London, New York, and Tokyo to ensure consistent data standards and delivery practices.
🎯 Requirements
- • 3+ years of experience leading cross-functional, product-oriented engineering teams
- • Solid grasp of backend development, ideally with Java or Python, and both relational and NoSQL databases
- • Solid understanding of data warehouse technologies and ETL pipelines — including experience migrating away from legacy, bespoke pipelines toward governed, self-serve data delivery platforms
- • Strong understanding of distributed system design, particularly microservice architectures — with hands-on experience building event-driven, fan-out distribution systems (Kafka, Redpanda, Confluent)
- • Familiarity with Data Governance Tools, Processes and Practices incl. data catalogues, Schema versioning, data contracts, and schema registry patterns
- • Excellent communication skills and a collaborative mindset — you build strong relationships with senior engineers, product peers, other engineering managers, and various stakeholders
- • Familiarity with building applications and infrastructure on AWS
🏖️ Benefits
- • Work from abroad up to 30 calendar days a year
- • Hybrid work and flex-time
- • International team and social events
- • Subsidized urban mobility and access to fitness and wellness options
- • Free access to Langdock and all its amazing functionalities
- • Career & training opportunities
