📋 Description
- • Lead end-to-end fraud and AML detection operations for a high-volume African fintech platform processing over $300 million monthly.
- • Design, build, and optimize risk detection systems including monitoring logic, alerting scenarios, and thresholds to identify financial crime patterns.
- • Translate regulatory requirements, partner obligations, and audit findings into scalable technical and operational controls across multiple markets.
- • Manage and mentor a team of Fraud and AML specialists and first-line managers, ensuring adequate coverage, capability, and day-to-day execution.
- • Establish feedback loops between investigation outcomes and detection strategies to improve signal quality and reduce false positives.
- • Measure and manage detection performance using quantitative metrics including precision, recall, alert-to-case conversion, and loss metrics.
- • Define and improve SLAs, KPIs, and quality frameworks across all Financial Crime teams to balance speed, quality, and regulatory compliance.
- • Partner with Product and Engineering teams to inform the roadmap for monitoring, alerting, and case management tools.
- • Collaborate with Legal, Compliance, Risk, and Data teams to align detection systems with regulatory obligations and optimize rule effectiveness.
- • Maintain auditable documentation of detection logic, business assumptions, and strategic changes to support audits and regulatory engagements.
- • Stay ahead of evolving financial crime typologies, sanctions, AML/CTF risks, and regional regulatory developments across Paystack’s operational footprint.
- • Provide clear, data-driven updates to senior stakeholders on operational performance, emerging risks, and mitigation strategies.
- • Ensure detection systems are robust, domain-accurate, and scalable to support Paystack’s accelerated growth across Africa.
- • Drive operational excellence by using data and metrics to manage team capacity and investigate cases efficiently while maintaining a positive customer experience.
- • Serve as the primary subject matter expert during audits, partner reviews, and regulatory engagements.
- • Balance customer experience with stringent financial crime prevention requirements in a high-growth, ambiguous environment.
- • Apply deep understanding of fraud patterns, transaction screening, and sanctions screening to design controls that protect customers, merchants, and the financial ecosystem.
🎯 Requirements
- • 7+ years in financial crime roles within payments, fintech, banking, or financial services
- • Proven experience designing, building, and tuning risk detection systems for fraud or AML
- • Experience measuring and optimizing detection performance using quantitative metrics (precision, recall, false positives, alert-to-case conversion)
- • Strong systems thinking to design scalable, maintainable monitoring frameworks rather than one-off rules
- • Deep understanding of financial crime typologies, AML/CTF requirements, sanctions, and regulatory obligations
- • Proven experience leading and developing teams, including coaching, direction-setting, and performance management
🏖️ Benefits
- • Opportunity to define financial crime detection systems at a leading African fintech scaling across the continent
- • Work with high-impact partners including MTN, Bolt, and Domino’s Pizza
- • Collaborate with cross-functional teams in Product, Engineering, Legal, Compliance, and Data
- • Direct influence on Paystack’s ability to scale safely and securely in emerging markets
