📋 Description

• As a Forward Deployed Engineer at WordPress VIP (Automattic), you will serve as an embedded technical partner to enterprise customers in Media, Government, and Enterprise sectors, solving high-stakes architectural challenges while driving expansion through consultative engineering and trusted advisory work.
• You will engage directly with large VIP customers—often embedded in their teams—to ensure successful adoption, integration, and scaling of WordPress VIP solutions, diagnosing and resolving complex technical problems in real-time while maximizing customer value from the platform, integrations, and partner ecosystem.
• You will drive expansion through services-led growth by identifying professional services opportunities, defining scopes of work for technical expansion projects, and participating in presales and renewal discussions as the technical voice of confidence and credibility.
• You will hold and share deep customer context by maintaining a living technical knowledge base of customer architectures, acting as the internal authority on assigned environments, and contributing to team-wide tooling and process improvements using platforms like Rocketlane, Notion, and AI-assisted workflows.
• You will contribute to the evolution of the Forward Deployed Engineering practice by using data to refine engagement models, experimenting with AI-assisted workflows to improve delivery efficiency, and collaborating with leadership to expand the practice into a repeatable, revenue-driving function.
• You will operate at the intersection of engineering, consulting, and customer success, translating complex customer needs into actionable technical and business outcomes while balancing engineering rigor with commercial objectives in ambiguous, high-impact environments.
• You will join a distributed team of over 1,500 Automatticians worldwide, working remotely with an open vacation policy, contributing to a mission-driven company that powers influential web properties from the White House to Meta and Salesforce through open-source technology.
• You will continuously learn and adapt to new tools, patterns, and customer contexts, developing expertise in enterprise-scale WordPress, AI-assisted development, observability, and modern DevOps practices while shaping the future of open-source technology at scale.

🎯 Requirements

• 5+ years of hands-on experience in web or application engineering, with minimum proficiency in PHP and/or JavaScript.
• Strong familiarity with WordPress at scale, including architectures, REST APIs, caching/CDNs, performance optimization, integration methods, and security hardening.
• Experience working directly with large customers in technical consulting, architecture, or professional services.
• Proven ability to diagnose and resolve complex technical issues in distributed or high-traffic environments.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, effective in both technical debugging sessions and executive briefings.
• Commercial mindset: ability to identify value expansion opportunities and articulate ROI to non-technical stakeholders.
