📋 Description

• As a Forward-Deployed Software Engineer on the founding team of Fractional AI's new enterprise division, you will be at the vanguard of transforming theoretical AI into practical, high-impact solutions for leading organizations.
• This role uniquely blends deep software engineering with direct customer engagement, empowering you to own the entire lifecycle of AI application delivery, from initial concept and scoping through to deployment and ongoing iteration.
• You will be instrumental in building and shipping bespoke AI applications, working closely with clients to understand their most complex challenges and architecting solutions that drive tangible business value.
• Your primary focus will be on coding, but with a crucial proximity to customers that ensures the solutions you build are precisely aligned with their needs and operational realities.
• By engaging with diverse use cases and clients, you will rapidly gain unparalleled experience in deploying LLM applications, far exceeding that of most AI engineers within a short timeframe.
• You will play a pivotal role in shaping the foundational engineering practices and the broader company culture of Fractional AI, influencing how the next 100 engineers learn, collaborate, and grow.
• The enterprise division is initially concentrating on the healthcare and life sciences sectors, leveraging the leadership team's extensive experience in these domains, with strategic plans for expansion into other industries.

• You will design, develop, and implement custom AI solutions, ensuring they are not only effective but also scalable and seamlessly integrated into client infrastructures.
• Collaboration is key; you will partner with a high-caliber team throughout the project lifecycle, including requirements gathering, rapid prototyping, robust system design, meticulous coding, comprehensive testing, efficient deployment, and responsive post-deployment support.
• Beyond technical contributions, you will actively influence Fractional AI's engineering and company culture, impacting areas such as learning methodologies, hiring strategies, and fostering a positive work environment.
• While the company is generally tech stack agnostic, much of the work involves Python, Typescript, Vercel, and Terraform, chosen based on client needs.
• You will gain fluency in the modern applied AI stack, including LangGraph, DSPy, VLLM, foundation model APIs, evaluation tools like Braintrust and Pydantic, and retrieval/deployment frameworks such as OpenPipe, Pinecone, and ChromaDB.
• A typical day involves being part of a dedicated Project Team focused on a specific client's high-impact AI need, such as automating call centers with AI phone agents or developing AI content moderation systems.
• You'll tackle high-priority tasks, such as building evaluation suites, and engage in weekly stand-ups with client CTOs to discuss progress, tradeoffs, and timelines.
• Participate in cross-project stand-ups and team lunches, fostering knowledge sharing and engaging in technical debates, for example, comparing the capabilities of Weights and Biases versus Braintrust.
• Dedicate time to focused, solo coding to advance project deliverables.
• Potentially join prospective customer calls to provide technical feasibility insights.
• The work pace is rapid yet sustainable, emphasizing good judgment and avoiding burnout.
• You will report to Rebecca, who leads the Enterprise engineering team, and collaborate closely with Kyle, who leads Enterprise sales and business development.
• Close collaboration with other engineers on the Enterprise team is expected, with project teams typically comprising 2-5 engineers and a Forward-Deployed Product Manager.
• Knowledge sharing extends to counterparts in San Francisco, New York City, and Dubai offices, facilitated by a unified Slack communication channel.
• You will also interact with executive leadership, including Co-Founder and CTO Eddie, CEO Chris, and Chairman Travis.
• This role is ideal for those who enjoy balancing speed and quality, thrive on variety across customers, languages, industries, and projects, and possess a deep understanding and appreciation for the customer's perspective.

• The work arrangement is 4 days in-person in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill Area, NC, with Fridays remote.

🎯 Requirements

• 5+ years of experience in software engineering, with a strong emphasis on writing elegant, production-ready code and a deep care for the craft.
• Strong proficiency across multiple programming languages, with a willingness to learn and adapt to customer-specific tech stacks.
• Demonstrated ability to solve complex, novel problems, including comfort with self-teaching, asking critical questions, and experimenting to find solutions.
• Proven experience in high-ownership environments, taking initiative, functioning with limited structure, and contributing to shaping work processes.
• Comfort and skill in user-facing conversations, deeply valuing the user experience and ensuring solutions meet their needs.
• Excellent teamwork and collaboration skills, including a willingness to help others and ask for help, championing integrity, and contributing to a culture of personal growth.
