Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • As a Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) in OpenAI’s Life Sciences team, you will lead end-to-end deployments of frontier AI models within regulated life sciences environments, directly impacting scientific discovery, clinical development, and regulatory workflows by translating complex domain needs into production-ready AI systems that meet stringent compliance and audit standards.
- • You will own the full deployment lifecycle — from initial scoping and problem framing with domain experts to technical design, launch readiness, production adoption, and iterative improvement — ensuring AI systems are not only technically sound but also validated, traceable, and aligned with regulatory expectations in biotech, pharma, and research institutions.
- • You will partner closely with customers’ scientific, clinical, and operational teams, as well as OpenAI’s Research, Platform/Product, Engineering, Security/GRC, and Business units, acting as a trusted technical advisor who bridges deep domain knowledge with cutting-edge AI capabilities to define repeatable deployment patterns and product feedback loops.
- • You will design and implement rigorous evaluation frameworks (evals) that measure model and system performance against workflow-specific scientific benchmarks, using error analysis and deployment learnings to refine acceptance criteria, improve model selection, and generate evidence for regulatory inspection and audit readiness.
- • You will distill deployment insights into reusable technical primitives — including reference architectures, validation templates, benchmark harnesses, and operating standards — that accelerate future deployments across life sciences environments and inform OpenAI’s product and model roadmaps.
- • You will operate with significant autonomy and impact in ambiguous, high-stakes environments, applying systems thinking and engineering judgment to turn failures, escalations, and audit findings into improved operating procedures, validation artifacts, and scalable deployment patterns that enhance both customer outcomes and platform reliability.
- • You will join a mission-driven team at OpenAI committed to ensuring AI benefits all of humanity, working in a hybrid model (3 days/week in London) with relocation support and up to 30% travel to customer sites, contributing to the safe and responsible deployment of AI in some of the most critical and regulated sectors of scientific innovation.
🎯 Requirements
- • 6+ years of software, ML/AI, or deployment engineering experience with customer-facing ownership in biotech, pharma, clinical research, scientific software, or adjacent technical domains.
- • Proven experience as a senior engineer, tech lead, or deployment owner trusted to make technical decisions in ambiguous, regulated environments, particularly around AI/GenAI systems in life sciences workflows.
- • Demonstrated success in owning end-to-end customer GenAI deployments from scoping through production adoption, including defining launch criteria, validation evidence, and acceptance thresholds for regulated use.
- • Experience designing and implementing evaluation systems (evals) that measure model performance against scientific benchmarks, using error analysis to refine system design and improve model selection over time.
- • Strong communication skills to translate technical tradeoffs into clear decisions, operating procedures, and measurable outcomes for diverse audiences including scientists, clinicians, regulators, and executives.
- • Ability to apply systems thinking and engineering judgment to turn deployment failures, escalations, and audit findings into improved operating standards, validation artifacts, and repeatable deployment patterns.
🏖️ Benefits
- • Hybrid work model: 3 days in the office per week in London, with flexibility for remote work.
- • Relocation assistance provided for candidates moving to London.
- • Travel reimbursement and support for up to 30% travel to customer sites across life sciences organizations.
- • Access to OpenAI’s cutting-edge AI models, research, and platform tools to solve real-world scientific challenges.
- • Opportunity to shape the future of AI in regulated industries by defining standards, validation practices, and reference architectures adopted across the life sciences sector.
- • Comprehensive health, wellness, and financial benefits package aligned with OpenAI’s commitment to employee well-being and inclusive workplace culture.
- • Equity compensation and participation in OpenAI’s mission to ensure artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity.
