📋 Description

• As a Machine Learning Engineer on the Foundational team at Harmattan AI Inc., you will build the 'brain' of tactical robots by designing and scaling large-scale, multi-modal foundational models that learn robust battlefield representations from unlabelled Electro-Optical (EO) and Infrared (IR) data using Self-Supervised Learning (SSL). Your work provides the critical foundational weights that the Edge AI team distills into hyper-accurate models running on tactical hardware, directly enabling mission-critical autonomous defense systems for allied forces.
• Day to day, you will design neural network architectures (Vision Transformers) and loss functions (Masked Autoencoders, Contrastive Learning) for multi-modal SSL; manage and optimize distributed training pipelines across multi-node GPU clusters with mixed-precision and efficient data loading; develop metrics and linear-probing benchmarks to evaluate representation quality; audit EO/IR data lakes and implement cross-attention mechanisms for sensor fusion; and collaborate closely with Data Engineers and the Edge AI team to ensure seamless model handoffs and high-performance deployment.

• In this role, you will deepen your expertise in cutting-edge SSL and multi-modal vision architectures, gain hands-on experience scaling foundation models on large GPU clusters, strengthen your systems-level engineering skills in PyTorch and low-level languages, and contribute directly to ethical defense technology with tangible impact on allied forces’ capabilities.

🎯 Requirements

• PhD or highly research-focused MS in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Computer Vision, or Applied Mathematics
• Minimum 5-6 years of experience training and scaling deep learning vision models (ViTs, CNNs) from scratch in multi-GPU/multi-node environments
• Hardcore PyTorch engineering skills with deep mathematical intuition for representation learning
• Knowledge of system-level languages (C++, Rust, or Go) and resource optimization for edge computing
• Experience applying novel SSL or multi-modal architectures (e.g., CLIP, MAE, DINO) to real-world non-standard imaging data (IR, SAR, hyperspectral)
