Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • Lead high-impact nonprofit consulting engagements across Aprio’s six business pillars, serving as the primary day-to-day contact for CFOs, Executive Directors, and Board Finance Committees of mission-driven organizations ranging from community health centers to international NGOs.
- • Own the full project lifecycle—from initial financial assessment through post-implementation support—by designing project plans, allocating resources, and ensuring deliverables are completed on time, within budget, and at the quality standards expected of a nationally ranked CPA and advisory firm.
- • Conduct rigorous financial and data analyses that uncover actionable insights: build complex reconciliations between donor databases and the general ledger, identify leakage in restricted-fund tracking, and model multi-year operating scenarios that help clients decide whether to launch new programs or scale existing ones.
- • Drive month-end and year-end close processes for clients whose internal teams may be lean or in transition; oversee journal entries, accruals, and variance analyses, then translate the numbers into board-ready narratives that empower non-financial stakeholders to make strategic decisions.
- • Spearhead system implementations and chart-of-account redesigns, partnering with technology vendors and client staff to configure cloud-based accounting platforms (Sage Intacct, NetSuite, Blackbaud, etc.) so that reporting dimensions align with grant compliance and Uniform Guidance requirements.
- • Prepare and present periodic financial packages—statement of activities, functional expense schedules, liquidity dashboards, and cash-flow forecasts—to senior management and governing boards, ensuring transparency and building trust with institutional funders and major donors.
- • Evaluate, document, and improve financial policies and procedures to strengthen internal controls, segregation of duties, and risk management; benchmark against leading practices in the nonprofit sector and incorporate COSO and OMB Uniform Guidance standards.
- • Serve as the client’s liaison during annual financial statement audits and IRS Form 990 preparation; coordinate PBC schedules, respond to auditor inquiries, and compile 990 data-collection templates that streamline filing and reduce compliance risk.
- • Mentor and supervise staff consultants and senior associates, providing real-time coaching on technical accounting, client communication, and project management; conduct performance reviews and create individualized development plans that feed Aprio’s pipeline of future leaders.
- • Identify and pursue process-improvement opportunities across payroll, accounts payable, cash receipts, and grant billing workflows; leverage automation tools such as Bill.com, Expensify, and RPA bots to cut close-cycle times by 20–40% and free client teams for higher-value analysis.
- • Demonstrate thought leadership by authoring whitepapers, hosting webinars, and speaking at nonprofit finance conferences on topics like indirect cost rate optimization, ASU 2016-14 implementation, and scenario planning in uncertain funding environments.
- • Collaborate with Aprio Partners and Directors on business-development initiatives: scope new engagements, draft proposals, and deliver orals that win work; participate in industry associations (AICPA NFP, Greater Washington Society of CPAs, AFP, etc.) to expand Aprio’s nonprofit footprint.
- • Maintain flexibility to work on-site at client locations throughout the DC metro area and other geographies as needed, while also leveraging Aprio’s hybrid model to balance personal and professional priorities.
🎯 Requirements
- • 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, including deep, hands-on expertise in U.S. GAAP for not-for-profit entities and familiarity with OMB Uniform Guidance and Single Audit requirements
- • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or equivalent; active CPA license strongly preferred
- • Demonstrated success managing multiple client engagements simultaneously while meeting tight deadlines and maintaining exceptional accuracy
- • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, Power Query, complex formulas), Word, and PowerPoint; working knowledge of leading cloud accounting and ERP systems
- • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills with the ability to tailor messaging to executive, board, and staff audiences
🏖️ Benefits
- • Medical, dental, and vision insurance effective on day one of employment
- • 401(k) with profit-sharing and discretionary performance-based incentive compensation
- • Flexible PTO structure plus nine paid holidays and generous parental leave for both primary and secondary caregivers
- • Tuition assistance and CPA support program with cash bonus upon completion
