Full Job Description

📋 Description

  • CloudZero is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to lead the architectural evolution of our cutting-edge FinOps platform, designed to support the world's leading engineering organizations. This is a pivotal, hands-on role where you will not only contribute directly to the codebase but also set the technical direction and elevate the engineering standards for scaling our sophisticated, serverless, service-oriented architecture.
  • Our platform empowers customers with real-time, high-performance access to critical cost intelligence, enabling them to make informed decisions. We have built a unique system that delivers complex cost analytics with sub-second response times, but as we experience rapid growth, the architecture that brought us here needs to evolve to support our next order of magnitude.
  • You will be instrumental in architecting for scale and performance, designing and implementing robust orchestration, performance, and resilience patterns. This involves identifying and resolving bottlenecks, evaluating complex tradeoffs, and delivering solutions that maintain exceptional response times and operational efficiency through advanced caching strategies, refined service boundaries, and innovative new approaches as the system continues to mature.
  • A key aspect of this role is anticipating and proactively addressing scaling risks. You will leverage your extensive experience to identify architectural gaps and technical debt before they become critical blockers, applying pattern recognition from past growth phases to help the team avoid predictable scaling pitfalls and ensure a smooth trajectory.
  • You will drive clear, principled technical decisions, grounding architectural choices in real-world experience and proven patterns. Your ability to articulate tradeoffs will be crucial in guiding the organization to invest engineering effort strategically, ensuring we focus on what truly matters for long-term success and scalability.
  • The role demands guiding the evolution of our service-oriented architecture to accommodate increasing complexity while rigorously preserving simplicity, maintainability, and predictable behavior. You will advocate for streamlined systems with fewer moving parts, well-defined service boundaries, and architectures that are inherently easy to reason about and manage.
  • Beyond technical contributions, you will mentor and elevate the engineering judgment of the team. You'll share hard-earned insights on scaling complex systems, microservices, and distributed architectures, helping engineers develop the critical intuition that comes from navigating real growth inflection points and overcoming significant technical challenges.
  • Translating complexity into strategic insight is paramount. You will communicate technical constraints and opportunities effectively, ensuring that architectural considerations meaningfully shape product and business decisions, not just implementation details. Your influence will help ensure our technology strategy aligns perfectly with our business objectives.
  • This role requires a deep understanding of microservice architectures, distributed systems, and modern infrastructure. You should have a proven track record of building and scaling SaaS platforms in production, with demonstrable experience in making architectural decisions that have withstood significant customer growth.
  • We are looking for evidence that you have helped a platform scale by an order of magnitude, and can articulate the challenges faced, the solutions implemented, and the rationale behind those decisions. Your expertise in service-oriented and microservice architectures, including orchestration patterns and their practical implications at scale, is essential.
  • Strong distributed systems instincts are required, covering areas such as latency, consistency, caching, resilience, data flows, and operational tradeoffs that extend beyond theoretical knowledge. Fluency with modern infrastructure and deployment patterns, including Kubernetes container orchestration and serverless technologies where appropriate, is also key.
  • Experience designing and evolving authentication and authorization systems that scale effectively, balancing security, usability, and performance, is highly desirable. Your communication skills should be clear and trusted across various audiences, enabling you to translate technical nuances for leadership without losing critical engineering context.
  • You must be comfortable partnering cross-functionally with Product, Security, Infrastructure, and other Engineering teams to drive alignment and ensure successful product delivery in a high-velocity environment.
  • While this role is remote, a Boston-area presence or willingness to relocate is preferred, reflecting our energetic approach to building and scaling in a dynamic market.

🎯 Requirements

  • Extensive experience architecting, building, and scaling complex SaaS platforms in production, with a proven track record of making architectural decisions that have successfully supported significant customer growth (e.g., scaling by an order of magnitude).
  • Deep expertise in service-oriented and microservice architectures, including a strong understanding of orchestration patterns, inter-service communication strategies, and their practical implications for performance and reliability at scale.
  • Solid instincts and practical experience with distributed systems principles, including latency management, consistency models, caching strategies, resilience patterns, data flow optimization, and operational tradeoffs.
  • Fluency with modern cloud infrastructure and deployment patterns, such as Kubernetes container orchestration and serverless computing, and the ability to apply them judiciously.
  • Experience designing and evolving scalable authentication and authorization (AuthN/AuthZ) systems, balancing security requirements with usability and performance considerations.

🏖️ Benefits

  • Opportunity to lead architectural decisions for a rapidly growing, innovative FinOps platform used by top-tier companies.
  • Hands-on role with significant impact, directly contributing to the core product and shaping its future technical direction.
  • Collaborative and high-velocity engineering environment focused on solving complex technical challenges.
  • Competitive salary and equity package.
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Generous paid time off and holidays.
  • Remote work flexibility.
  • Professional development opportunities and support for continuous learning.
