Full Job Description

đź“‹ Description

  • • As a Product Design Strategist at Paper, you will sit at the intersection of design and product strategy, owning outcomes that directly impact student learning experiences. This hybrid role blends 60% design execution with 40% strategic decision-making, empowering you to shape what gets built, why it matters, and how it drives measurable educational impact for K-8 learners across North America.
  • • You will design engaging, intuitive interfaces for elementary and middle school students that transform complex educational concepts into enjoyable, game-like experiences—making learning feel less like homework and more like leveling up through thoughtful interaction design, visual storytelling, and age-appropriate gamification.
  • • You will define product scope and prioritization by synthesizing user research, business objectives, and technical feasibility, making tough calls on feature trade-offs while ensuring alignment with Paper’s mission to improve academic outcomes and student engagement.
  • • You will manage end-to-end product delivery by tracking dependencies, documenting edge cases and error states, and providing developers with comprehensive specs that bridge design intent and technical execution—reducing rework and accelerating shipping velocity.
  • • You will connect design decisions to business strategy by articulating how your work influences key metrics such as student retention, learning gains, and teacher satisfaction, ensuring that every pixel serves both user needs and organizational goals.
  • • You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams in engineering, education, and growth to advocate for student-centered solutions, using qualitative insights and quantitative data to justify trade-offs and drive consensus in fast-moving, remote-first environments.
  • • You will grow your impact by stretching beyond traditional design boundaries—developing product instincts, sharpening strategic thinking, and owning the full lifecycle from ideation to measured outcomes, supported by a culture that values ownership, curiosity, and continuous learning.
  • • You will contribute to Paper’s mission of educational equity by designing for diverse learners, including multilingual students and those from underserved communities, ensuring that accessibility, cultural relevance, and inclusivity are foundational to your design process.

🎯 Requirements

  • • Strong portfolio demonstrating illustration and visual design skills tailored to younger audiences (elementary through middle school), with evidence of engagement-focused work in educational tools, youth apps, or consumer gaming.
  • • Proven ability to define product features, set priorities, write specs, and manage scope—showing you’ve gone beyond execution to shape what gets built and why.
  • • Deep understanding of game mechanics, habit formation, and behavioral psychology, with examples of how you’ve applied these principles to increase user retention or engagement.
  • • Comfort with modern design tools (Figma) and enthusiasm for experimenting with new workflows that enhance creative output and team collaboration.
  • • Track record of connecting business goals to user needs to drive decisions that satisfy both stakeholders, supported by data-informed reasoning and clear articulation of trade-offs.
  • • Experience working in ambiguous, fast-paced environments where you’ve taken initiative to clarify roles, anticipate needs, and drive outcomes without waiting for direction.

🏖️ Benefits

  • • Competitive annual salary range of $110,000–$130,000 USD (or $100,000–$120,000 CAD) plus equity, with final compensation based on location, experience, and qualifications.
  • • Comprehensive health benefits, retirement plan, and stock options as part of a total rewards package designed to support long-term well-being and ownership.
  • • Generous time off including vacation, sick days, 4 extra weeks annually (statutory holidays, Paper Days, and a full Paper Week from Dec 25 to Jan 1).
  • • $500 home office setup stipend and $100 monthly ongoing workspace stipend to support your remote work environment.
  • • Unlimited access to Paper’s tutoring and educational support for employees’ children, reinforcing the company’s mission in your personal life.
  • • Generous paid parental leave and a remote-first culture with opportunities for in-person connection throughout the year.
