Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • Lead the inception and development of CuspAI’s internal application suite from scratch, treating all tools as first-class products with a focus on usability, scalability, and long-term maintainability.
- • Collaborate directly with the VP of Product to translate high-level research needs into clear technical roadmaps and intuitive software solutions that empower world-class AI and materials science teams.
- • Own the end-to-end lifecycle of internal applications, including architecture design, backend development, frontend deployment, and iterative improvement based on user feedback.
- • Design and build robust backend services in Python using modern web frameworks (FastAPI, Django, or Flask) to interface with core AI and research engines, integrating disparate workflows into a unified, high-performance internal platform.
- • Develop clean, responsive, and intuitive user interfaces using Node.js and modern frontend frameworks (React, Vue, or TypeScript) to enable researchers to interact effectively with complex datasets and reduce cognitive load.
- • Partner with the Data Engineering team to ensure seamless ingestion, processing, and visualization of complex, multidimensional scientific data within internal applications.
- • Work closely with AI Researchers and Data Engineers to deeply understand their daily tasks, pain points, and workflows, and build tools that directly enhance their productivity and discovery capabilities.
- • Ensure all internal tools align with the company’s overall infrastructure standards, security protocols, and engineering best practices across the platform.
- • Scale the internal application ecosystem to support increasingly complex interdisciplinary data flows as the company’s materials search engine evolves, with potential future involvement in external-facing interfaces.
- • Operate as a “builder” in a greenfield environment, making independent architectural decisions and prioritizing product quality over technical shortcuts.
- • Maintain a product-focused mindset by proactively identifying opportunities to improve user experience, streamline workflows, and remove friction for technical end-users.
- • Contribute to a collaborative, interdisciplinary team culture that bridges AI research, computational chemistry, and experimental science, with shared ownership of mission-driven outcomes.
- • Adapt to evolving priorities in a rapidly growing startup environment, where early-stage decision-making has direct and measurable impact on scientific progress.
- • Participate in office-based collaboration three days per week at CuspAI’s London, Cambridge, Amsterdam, or Berlin locations, with regular travel required for cross-team alignment and project work.
🎯 Requirements
- • 4+ years of professional experience in full-stack software engineering with a proven track record of building and maintaining production-grade applications
- • Strong backend expertise in Python and modern web frameworks (e.g., FastAPI, Django, Flask)
- • Proficiency in Node.js and modern frontend frameworks (e.g., React, Vue, TypeScript) with a keen eye for UI/UX best practices
- • Demonstrated ability to lead greenfield projects and make independent architectural decisions from scratch
- • Product-focused mindset—actively thinking about user needs and workflow improvements, not just writing code
- • Genuine excitement for enabling scientific discovery, even without a background in materials science, chemistry, or sustainability
🏖️ Benefits
- • Competitive salary with equity in CuspAI
- • 28 days holiday (DE, NL, UK) or 21 days holiday (JP, SG, US), plus local public holidays
- • Gold standard parental leave: 26 weeks (primary caregiver) and 12 weeks (secondary caregiver) at full pay
- • Professional development budget for career growth and skill enhancement
- • Opportunity to solve meaningful problems with direct impact on sustainability, climate, and materials science breakthroughs
- • True interdisciplinary teamwork with world-class researchers and engineers in AI, chemistry, and experimental science
