Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • Shape the future of the smart home: As a Python Engineer at the Open Home Foundation you will sit at the heart of Home Assistant, the world’s largest open-source smart-home platform by contributor count. Every pull request you review, every bug you triage, and every architectural decision you influence directly impacts millions of users who rely on an open, privacy-first, and sustainable ecosystem.
- • Own the quality gate for community code: You will perform rigorous code reviews on 20-50 pull requests per week from a global community of 3,000+ active contributors. Your feedback ensures that new integrations, automations, and core features meet strict performance, security, and maintainability standards while remaining welcoming to first-time contributors.
- • Triage and resolve high-impact issues: You will monitor GitHub issues, Discord threads, and community forums to identify, reproduce, and prioritize bugs and feature requests. By turning chaotic issue reports into clear, reproducible tickets, you enable faster fixes and prevent regressions from reaching stable releases.
- • Orchestrate asynchronous collaboration: Working fully remote with teammates spread from Lisbon to Helsinki, you will champion asynchronous, written-first communication. You will author architectural decision records (ADRs), update developer documentation, and create onboarding checklists that allow anyone, anywhere, to contribute effectively without real-time meetings.
- • Extend and refine developer tooling: You will improve CI pipelines, pre-commit hooks, and code-generation scripts that cut contributor friction in half. Whether you are speeding up pytest runs, automating type-checking with mypy, or integrating modern AI code-review assistants, your tooling work scales the impact of every engineer on the team.
- • Influence roadmap and architecture: You will join weekly architecture calls where you’ll debate the merits of asyncio patterns, data model migrations, and integration APIs. Your voice helps decide whether the next major release adopts a new config-flow wizard or deprecates legacy YAML syntax, balancing innovation with backward compatibility.
- • Mentor and grow the contributor base: You will pair-program with junior developers, review their first pull requests, and celebrate their merged commits on social media. Your mentorship turns curious users into long-term maintainers, ensuring Home Assistant remains a vibrant, sustainable project for decades.
- • Document tribal knowledge: You will convert undocumented quirks, edge-case behaviors, and hard-won performance tricks into living documentation. By writing clear, concise guides and auto-generated API docs, you reduce the time-to-first-contribution from days to hours.
- • Champion privacy and sustainability: Every line of code you ship reinforces the Foundation’s mission—no vendor lock-in, no cloud dependency, and minimal energy footprint. You will audit integrations for unnecessary network calls, advocate for local-first architectures, and help users keep their data at home.
- • Enjoy autonomy and impact: With no fixed schedule and only a three-hour overlap window for team sync, you design your day around deep-focus coding, European community office hours, or late-night bug hunts. Your work is measured by merged PRs, closed issues, and delighted users—not hours online.
