📋 Description

• Own and pursue a research agenda to improve model capability and performance for Personal AGI systems deployed via ChatGPT, the API, and future products.
• Collaborate closely with research and product teams across OpenAI to enable customers to optimize their own models and enhance AI-driven experiences.
• Build robust evaluations to track and measure improvements in model behavior, personalization, safety, factuality, instruction following, personality, interactivity, and multilingual fluency.
• Design, implement, test, and debug code across the company’s ML research stack to close the capability overhang between power users and average consumers.
• Translate insights about current bottlenecks in model behavior into actionable training data, reward signals, and model architecture improvements.
• Focus on key capability areas including tool-use, feature discovery, connectors, and instruction following to advance AI as a personalized superassistant.
• Chart the strategic direction for what capabilities AI systems should strive toward, aligning technical research with product goals and human flourishing outcomes.
• Work within a hybrid model requiring 3 days per week in the San Francisco office, contributing to an environment focused on safe, efficient, and reliable AI deployment.
• Partner with cross-functional teams to ensure models are not only powerful but also safe, reliable, and aligned with human needs and ethical standards.
• Contribute to the evolution of ChatGPT from a chatbot into an infinitely capable, personalized AI assistant that supports global user autonomy and flourishing.
• Engage with large-scale ML codebases to debug complex issues and drive iterative improvements in model performance and behavior.
• Conduct research that bridges theoretical advancements with real-world product impact, ensuring AI capabilities are accessible to all users, not just technical experts.
• Maintain a strong focus on multilingual fluency, world interaction, and agent-like behaviors to expand the scope of AI utility across diverse user contexts.
• Apply deep machine learning expertise to define, measure, and enhance model capabilities across the entire training pipeline—from data curation to reward modeling.
• Work in a dynamic, technically complex environment that demands creativity, rigor, and product-driven research thinking.

• Deep understanding of machine learning and machine learning applications.
• Working knowledge of relevant models and building evaluations for model capability improvement.
• Comfort diving into large ML codebases to debug and optimize systems.
• Research experience in machine learning with a passion for product-driven innovation.
• Proven ability to translate research insights into training data, reward signals, and model improvements.
• Experience collaborating with cross-functional research and product teams.
