  • • Lead a team of technical sales professionals focused on serving startups leveraging OpenAI’s AI models and APIs to drive innovation and growth.
  • • Develop and execute a comprehensive sales strategy for the startup segment, aligning with overall Go To Market objectives and driving consumption-based revenue growth.
  • • Partner closely with Solutions, Product, Developer Relations, and Marketing teams to design and implement customer programs that enable startups to effectively deploy OpenAI technologies.
  • • Own executive-level relationships with startup founders and decision-makers, serving as a trusted advisor to help them integrate AI into their product strategies and internal workflows.
  • • Manage and forecast consumption revenue for startup accounts, ensuring accurate pipeline tracking and alignment with company-wide financial targets.
  • • Advocate for the startup customer experience by synthesizing product feedback, usage patterns, and pain points from startup customers to influence OpenAI’s product roadmap and platform improvements.
  • • Actively monitor the startup ecosystem, including competitor activity, emerging trends, key players, and partner dynamics, to inform corporate strategy and product positioning.
  • • Support the recruitment, onboarding, and development of high-performing sales team members, contributing to team culture and operational excellence.
  • • Design and lead high-visibility customer events such as Customer Advisory Boards, product launches, and industry conferences to deepen startup engagement and visibility for OpenAI.
  • • Gather, analyze, and distill complex market intelligence — including customer, competitor, and industry data — to guide strategic decisions across sales, product, and marketing functions.
  • • Report on customer success metrics and sales activities, translating insights into actionable strategies to improve adoption, retention, and expansion within the startup segment.
  • • Build systems and processes from the ground up to scale sales operations for a rapidly growing, product-led startup customer base.
  • • Foster a customer-centric mindset across the team, prioritizing deep understanding of startup needs and helping them achieve their long-term AI vision.
  • • Maintain a passionate, curious approach to artificial intelligence, educating customers on AI capabilities, ethical deployment, and future applications that benefit humanity.
  • • Embrace ambiguity and complexity; thrive in a fast-moving environment where bespoke challenges require multidimensional solutions and continuous experimentation.
  • • Think strategically over multi-year horizons, aligning internal stakeholders and external partners around long-term GTM vision and execution.
  • • Work from OpenAI’s San Francisco office on a hybrid schedule, requiring three days per week in-office.

🎯 Requirements

  • • 8+ years leading sales teams
  • • Deep experience working in the startup ecosystem as a founder, early employee, or by serving startup customers
  • • Proven track record selling platform-as-a-service (PaaS) and/or software-as-a-service (SaaS) at a product-led growth company
  • • Experience designing and executing complex deal strategies
  • • Demonstrated ability to support the growth of fast-growing, high-performance startups
  • • Experience leading high-visibility customer events (e.g., Customer Advisory Boards, conferences, product launches)
