Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • As a Security Engineer, Host Assurance at OpenAI, you will play a critical role in establishing the foundational trust layer for bare-metal infrastructure that powers frontier AI research and deployment, ensuring hardware platforms are secure, verifiable, and reliable before running sensitive workloads.
- • You will design, build, and operate core components of the Host Assurance platform, including machine identity systems, HSM-backed trust services, host attestation, secure bootstrap processes, and firmware validation tooling, directly enabling secure and scalable deployment of compute across global infrastructure.
- • You will partner with infrastructure, research, and confidential computing teams to eliminate insecure bootstrap patterns, validate hardware and firmware integrity, and ensure hosts meet verifiable security properties from delivery through orchestration readiness.
- • You will contribute to defining observable, testable security properties for host platforms, improve telemetry and validation systems, and participate in incident response and post-incident analysis for security-critical infrastructure.
- • You will work across deployment models and provider boundaries, helping to make the secure path the easiest path by collaborating with provisioning, fleet, and orchestration teams to deliver paved, reliable trust services at scale.
- • You will gain deep expertise in low-level platform security, applied cryptography, secure boot, firmware validation, and hardware trust mechanisms while operating in a high-impact, ambiguous environment shaping the future of AI infrastructure.
- • You will develop production-grade systems that balance security rigor with operational pragmatism, ensuring trust services are not only secure but also usable, maintainable, and dependable in fast-moving production environments.
🎯 Requirements
- • Strong software engineering experience building and operating reliable production systems at scale.
- • Deep expertise in at least one relevant domain such as PKI, HSMs, machine identity, applied cryptography, secure boot, firmware or hardware security, host attestation, or low-level platform security.
- • Experience writing production-quality code and reasoning clearly about failure modes, operational safety, and long-term maintainability.
- • Ability to work across systems boundaries, from services and APIs down to host, boot, firmware, or hardware-adjacent trust mechanisms.
- • Experience replacing fragile or manual security mechanisms with durable, paved-path infrastructure.
- • Self-directed, low-ego mindset with willingness to work across disciplines to solve high-impact, ambiguous problems.
🏖️ Benefits
- • Hybrid work model with 3 days in the office per week, preferably based in San Francisco, CA or Seattle, WA.
- • Relocation assistance for new employees.
- • Opportunity to work on foundational security infrastructure that directly supports OpenAI’s mission to ensure artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity.
- • Exposure to cutting-edge confidential computing initiatives and novel hardware platforms at the forefront of AI infrastructure.
- • Collaborative, interdisciplinary environment working with infrastructure, research, and security teams on high-stakes, large-scale systems.
- • Commitment to reasonable accommodations for applicants with disabilities and equal opportunity employment practices.
