Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • Senior Assembly Manufacturing Engineer at Olix USA Inc. in London, responsible for owning front-end packaging processes for the company’s Optical Tensor Processing Unit (OTPU), a next-generation optical compute hardware designed to overcome current AI infrastructure limitations by delivering unprecedented performance and energy efficiency.
- • This role is critical to translating cutting-edge photonic and electro-mechanical designs into scalable, manufacturable products, bridging the gap between prototype innovation and volume production through hands-on process ownership, DFM/DFA leadership, and close collaboration with contract manufacturers.
- • Day-to-day responsibilities include defining and owning assembly processes for complex opto-electronic module hardware, from prototype through NPI and into production, with specific focus on substrate-level flip-chip bonding (attach, reflow, underfill, inspection), underfill, reflow, and inspection steps to ensure process stability and yield.
- • Creating and maintaining comprehensive manufacturing documentation such as assembly instructions, work standards, process flows, build records, and SOPs to ensure traceability, repeatability, and compliance across all build stages.
- • Driving DFM/DFA reviews with mechanical, electrical, optics/photonics, and systems engineering teams to ensure designs are practical, cost-effective, and assembly-ready, reducing downstream risk and avoiding late-stage redesign.
- • Developing and improving tooling, fixtures, jigs, and build aids to support consistent, high-quality assembly operations, including establishing build readiness criteria and leading structured handover from engineering to manufacturing.
- • Supporting production ramp planning and readiness reviews, monitoring production quality and yield, leading root cause analysis for recurring issues, and driving continuous improvement in safety, quality, cost, throughput, and cycle time.
- • Partnering with test and quality teams to ensure assembly processes enable efficient module-level bring-up, inspection, and validation, while maintaining visibility of production blockers and escalating or resolving them promptly.
- • Supporting photonics integration by implementing and maintaining cleanliness, handling, and ESD controls for opto-electronic assembly, contributing to in-line verification approaches, and flagging manufacturability risks in optical sub-assemblies early.
- • Acting as the primary manufacturing engineering interface with contract manufacturers (CMs), defining and communicating build standards, quality expectations, and process controls, auditing compliance, managing component readiness, and leading technical reviews to align on process changes and corrective actions.
- • Collaborating closely with cross-functional teams throughout the product development cycle to provide manufacturing input early in design reviews, represent manufacturing operations in programme reviews, and ensure supply chain readiness for components and sub-assemblies.
- • The role offers the opportunity to work on a transformative technology at the forefront of optical computing, where the engineer’s expertise directly impacts the scalability and success of a hardware platform poised to redefine AI infrastructure.
- • Success in this role means establishing robust, yield-optimized assembly processes that enable Olix to transition from prototype to volume production with confidence, contributing to the creation of what could become the most important computing company of the next decade.
🎯 Requirements
- • 8+ years of experience in manufacturing, assembly engineering, industrialisation, or production engineering within complex hardware environments, preferably involving electro-mechanical or opto-electronic systems.
- • Proven hands-on experience owning and improving assembly processes across prototype, NPI, and early production ramp stages, with specific expertise in substrate-level or package-level assembly, including flip-chip bonding (attach, reflow, underfill, inspection).
- • Strong understanding of DFM/DFA principles and demonstrated ability to translate advanced engineering designs into robust, repeatable, and cost-effective manufacturing processes.
- • Experience creating and maintaining manufacturing documentation such as work instructions, SOPs, process flows, BoMs, and build records.
- • Hands-on experience with tooling, fixtures, jigs, and line setup for precision assembly operations, including design, validation, and optimization.
- • Track record in problem-solving, root cause analysis, yield improvement, and implementation of corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) in production environments.
🏖️ Benefits
- • Competitive salary of £109,000, commensurate with experience and location.
- • Meaningful stock options (equity & ownership) as part of the compensation package.
- • £24k annual Living-Local Bonus for employees residing within 20 minutes of the office to minimize commute and maximize work-life balance.
- • Premium healthcare coverage via BUPA, including medical and dental cover with Medical History Disregarded (MHD).
- • 25 days of annual leave plus all UK bank holidays.
- • Access to elite hardware (M4 Macs, with M4 Pro upgrades available), high-spec noise-cancelling headphones, and fully ergonomic workstations.
- • Access to a high-performance 3D printing lab for rapid prototyping, experimentation, and personal projects.
- • Chef-prepared meals for late workdays and a tab at a local coffee shop for caffeine.
- • Full UK and international visa sponsorship, plus seamless relocation support via a dedicated partner for domestic and international moves.
