Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • Own the architecture, development, and scaling of the core backend services that power Afresh’s Fresh Operating System, the AI platform trusted by regional and national grocery chains to manage $1.6 billion in produce orders and prevent 34 million pounds of food waste.
- • Design and implement high-throughput, low-latency microservices in Python and Go that ingest and process millions of real-time inventory, sales, and weather data points daily, ensuring our forecasting models always have the freshest inputs.
- • Lead cross-functional initiatives with Data Science, Product, and Design to translate complex forecasting and optimization algorithms into production-grade APIs that grocery store managers rely on to make daily ordering decisions.
- • Build resilient data pipelines that integrate with legacy ERP, POS, and supply-chain systems, abstracting away decades-old quirks so our partners can adopt Afresh without costly infrastructure overhauls.
- • Champion observability and reliability: instrument services with distributed tracing, metrics, and alerting; define and monitor SLOs that keep critical ordering workflows running 24/7 across thousands of stores.
- • Architect cloud-native solutions on AWS (EKS, Lambda, RDS, S3, Kinesis) with infrastructure-as-code (Terraform) to ensure every line of code you ship is reproducible, secure, and cost-efficient at grocery-scale.
- • Optimize database performance across PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, and Redis, balancing consistency, availability, and partition tolerance for workloads that range from real-time price look-ups to nightly batch forecasting jobs.
- • Mentor junior engineers through code reviews, pair programming, and architecture guilds, fostering a culture where knowledge sharing accelerates innovation and reduces single points of failure.
- • Collaborate with security and compliance teams to implement SOC 2 controls, encrypt PII, and maintain audit trails that satisfy both enterprise retailers and regulatory bodies.
- • Contribute to our open-source initiatives and internal tooling, turning operational pain points into reusable libraries that multiply the productivity of every engineer at Afresh.
- • Influence product strategy by translating customer feedback into technical roadmaps, ensuring our backend evolves ahead of grocery industry trends and sustainability goals.
- • Participate in an on-call rotation that respects work-life balance—our follow-the-sun remote culture means pages are rare and root-cause fixes are prioritized over band-aids.
🎯 Requirements
- • 5+ years of backend engineering experience shipping production services in Python, Go, or similar languages.
- • Proven track record designing and operating distributed systems at scale on AWS or another major cloud provider.
- • Deep expertise with relational databases (PostgreSQL) and at least one NoSQL store (DynamoDB, Redis, Cassandra).
- • Strong understanding of event-driven architectures, message queues (Kafka, SQS, Kinesis), and asynchronous processing patterns.
- • Nice-to-have: experience integrating with grocery or retail ERP/POS systems, or domain knowledge in supply-chain or perishables logistics.
🏖️ Benefits
- • Fully remote-first culture with quarterly in-person retreats, generous home-office stipend, and flexible working hours.
- • Competitive salary plus meaningful equity in a high-growth Series B startup on a mission to eliminate food waste.
- • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage for you and dependents, plus a monthly wellness stipend.
- • 20 days PTO, 11 federal holidays, and a company-wide end-of-year recharge week—because sustainable impact starts with sustainable people.
