📋 Description

• Own the front-end across Relay’s product, setting and raising the bar for UI/UX quality, craftsmanship, and consistency through intentional implementation and systematic reduction of UI/UX debt.
• Embed within product teams to lead end-to-end UI implementation of new features—from concept through launch—collaborating closely with product managers, designers, and engineers to ensure shipped experiences meet high standards of polish, usability, and accessibility.
• Own and evolve Telegraph, Relay’s public design system: define and maintain component APIs, composition patterns, interaction standards, and comprehensive documentation to enable scalable, consistent interface development across engineering teams.
• Champion accessibility and performance as non-negotiable product requirements, ensuring all interfaces are fast, resilient, and accessible by default through semantic HTML, keyboard navigation, focus management, and continuous performance optimization.
• Partner directly with designers throughout the product development lifecycle, working collaboratively in both code and design tools to iterate on concepts, refine interactions, and eliminate traditional handoffs in favor of continuous, real-time collaboration.
• Create organizational leverage by translating design intent into reusable components, guidelines, sandboxes, and educational documentation that reduce drift and accelerate team velocity.
• Build infrastructure and workflows that support AI-accelerated product development, including automating QA and code review processes, integrating design and engineering tools, and establishing prototyping templates.
• Maintain a high standard of engineering practice by working within a shared codebase using Git, writing and reviewing PRs, and contributing to architectural decisions that scale quality across the product.
• Advocate for cross-browser compatibility, functional motion, and responsive design as integral parts of the build process—not as afterthoughts—ensuring every interaction is deliberate and performant.
• Contribute to shaping the future of Relay’s Design Engineering function during its formative stage, influencing how it integrates with product teams, scales its impact, and defines best practices for the company’s long-term product development philosophy.

🎯 Requirements

• Proficient in React, JavaScript (TypeScript), HTML, and modern CSS
• Experienced in a real engineering environment using Git, PR workflows, code reviews, and shared codebases
• Able to identify and articulate specific flaws or strengths in designs or components, with clear rationale for improvement
• Hold a high personal bar for craft, demonstrated through portfolio or GitHub contributions that reflect attention to detail and obsession with the last 10% of quality
• Prioritize speed, reusability, accessibility, cross-browser support, and functional motion during development, not as add-ons
• Demonstrate genuine curiosity and practical understanding of AI tooling, with experience building with or integrating AI into development workflows
