Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • Be the catalyst that turns Canva’s ambitious GenAI roadmap into production-ready reality. As a Senior Machine Learning Engineer in the AI Platform Enablement squad, you will sit at the epicenter of innovation—where cutting-edge research meets the scale and reliability of a product loved by 170 million monthly users. You won’t just ship models; you will architect the pathways that let dozens of product teams ship faster, safer, and smarter.
- • Own the end-to-end technical narrative for high-impact AI initiatives. One week you may be profiling latency bottlenecks in a diffusion-based image-generation microservice; the next week you’ll pair-program with a product squad in Tokyo to integrate a new retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) stack. Your code and recommendations will ripple through the company, turning fragile prototypes into hardened, cost-efficient, observable services.
- • Serve as the go-to solution expert across the entire ML lifecycle. From data-labeling pipelines that ingest billions of design elements to GPU-optimised inference clusters running on Kubernetes, you will debug, benchmark, and refactor until performance meets the “Canva standard” of sub-second magic. You’ll document every insight as reusable blueprints so that no team ever has to reinvent the wheel.
- • Build and curate “paved roads” that accelerate every AI builder at Canva. This means authoring production-grade templates, Terraform modules, CI/CD workflows, and evaluation harnesses that abstract away undifferentiated heavy lifting. Your internal customers—from computer-vision researchers to marketing-automation engineers—will rely on your tooling to move from Jupyter notebook to global rollout in days, not months.
- • Champion a culture of empirical rigor and continuous learning. You will design automated evaluation suites that measure model quality, fairness, and business impact across 100+ locales. When metrics drift, you’ll lead blameless post-mortems, distill root causes, and broadcast actionable fixes across Slack, tech talks, and internal blogs.
- • Context-switch effortlessly between firefighting and future-proofing. A critical model might start throwing CUDA OOM errors during an A/B test; minutes later you could be white-boarding the next-generation feature store with staff engineers. Your ability to zoom from tactical triage to strategic architecture is what keeps the entire AI ecosystem resilient and agile.
- • Collaborate across time zones with researchers, product managers, and designers. You will translate complex ML constraints into user-centric stories, negotiate trade-offs between model accuracy and UX latency, and ensure that every shipped feature delights creatives worldwide—whether they’re designing on a phone in São Paulo or a desktop in Sydney.
- • Influence the roadmap of the AI Platform Group itself. Your frontline exposure to product pain points will feed directly into prioritisation of new platform capabilities—be it dynamic batching for transformer inference, cost-aware auto-scaling policies, or privacy-preserving synthetic data generation. You are simultaneously user zero and co-author of the platform’s evolution.
- • Mentor and level-up engineers around you. Through pair programming, design reviews, and lightning talks, you will raise the collective ML ops IQ of Canva. Your greatest metric of success is when teams no longer need you—because the patterns you created have become their default way of working.
- • Relish the freedom of full-time remote work across ANZ while staying deeply connected. Daily virtual stand-ups, asynchronous Loom updates, and quarterly in-person summits ensure you can live in Melbourne, Wellington, or a beach town in Queensland without missing a beat of the action.
🎯 Requirements
- • Expert-level Python and demonstrable mastery of at least one major ML framework (TensorFlow, PyTorch, JAX).
- • Commercial experience deploying and tuning containerised ML workloads on Kubernetes, including writing custom operators or Helm charts when necessary.
- • Proven track record of building scalable data pipelines (batch or streaming) using tools like Apache Beam, Spark, or Flink; familiarity with feature stores is a plus.
- • Hands-on experience with model evaluation and monitoring—designing offline test harnesses, online A/B experiments, and drift-detection dashboards.
- • Deep knowledge of inference optimisation techniques: GPU kernel fusion, quantisation, distillation, or serving frameworks such as TensorRT, ONNX Runtime, or Triton.
- • Exceptional communication skills; able to explain complex technical trade-offs to researchers, engineers, and non-technical stakeholders alike.
🏖️ Benefits
- • Work fully remote from anywhere in Australia or New Zealand with a generous home-office setup allowance and annual travel credits for team gatherings.
- • Competitive equity package that turns every shipped AI feature into personal wealth as Canva continues its global growth trajectory.
- • Flexible working hours and meeting-light culture designed for deep-focus engineering and true work-life harmony.
- • Annual professional-development budget (conferences, courses, certifications) plus internal “AI Guild” days dedicated to experimentation and learning.
- • Comprehensive wellness benefits: mental-health support, paid volunteer days, and a monthly Vibe & Thrive allowance for gym, hobbies, or family activities.
