Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • Own the end-to-end lifecycle of machine-learning services that power Canva’s Visual Suite—Docs, Email, Sheets, Presentations, Websites, and Whiteboards—serving millions of users daily. You will architect, build, and continuously improve the inference, training, and data pipelines that turn research breakthroughs into production-ready features.
- • Act as the go-to solution expert for every ML domain: evaluations, training, inference, data pipelines, quality assurance, and optimisation. When product teams hit a wall—whether it’s a latency spike in a transformer model or a data skew issue in a computer-vision pipeline—you are the first call.
- • Embed directly with product squads as a trusted technical partner. You will pair-program, review pull requests, run blameless post-mortems, and translate fuzzy product requirements into crisp technical specs. Your success is measured by how quickly those squads ship reliable, scalable features.
- • Develop reusable blueprints, “paved roads,” and reference architectures that let any team at Canva reproduce your wins. Think Terraform modules for GPU autoscaling, evaluation harnesses for diffusion models, or Kubernetes Helm charts that cut cold-start latency by 40 %. Your code becomes the template everyone else copies.
- • Debug gnarly cross-stack issues that span Python services, Java micro-services, Kubernetes clusters, and bespoke CUDA kernels. You will root-cause memory leaks in TensorRT engines, chase down race conditions in async data loaders, and document your findings so the next engineer never has to suffer the same pain.
- • Optimise inference throughput and cost without sacrificing quality. You will profile models on A100s, experiment with quantisation, distill large networks into smaller ones, and roll out dynamic batching strategies that save six-figure cloud spend annually.
- • Champion a culture of reproducible science. You will design experiment-tracking systems, enforce data-versioning hygiene, and mentor peers on proper statistical evaluation. When leadership asks, “Did the new ranking model really improve engagement?” you have the dashboards and notebooks to prove it.
- • Balance rapid unblocking with long-term platform health. Sometimes you ship a quick patch to unblock a launch; other times you invest in a robust feature store that pays dividends for years. Your judgment call is trusted because you transparently share trade-offs and learnings.
- • Collaborate across time zones with backend engineers, data scientists, product managers, and UX researchers. You will run virtual design reviews, write concise RFCs, and give lightning talks that demystify complex ML topics for non-technical stakeholders.
- • Mentor junior engineers and interns through code reviews, pair programming, and career-development plans. Your feedback is specific, kind, and actionable, turning promising talent into high-impact contributors.
- • Stay ahead of the curve. You will evaluate emerging frameworks (JAX, LoRA, ONNX Runtime), run spike experiments, and present findings to the broader engineering org, ensuring Canva remains at the cutting edge of applied machine learning.
🎯 Requirements
- • 5+ years of commercial Python development, including deep experience with at least one major ML framework (TensorFlow, PyTorch, or JAX)
- • Proven track record deploying and scaling ML workloads on Kubernetes, including writing Dockerfiles, Helm charts, and K8s operators
- • Hands-on experience building and maintaining data pipelines (Airflow, Kubeflow, or similar) for model training and inference
- • Demonstrated ability to design and run rigorous model evaluations, including offline metrics and online A/B testing
- • Strong debugging skills across the full ML stack—from GPU kernels to distributed micro-services—with evidence of root-causing complex production incidents
🏖️ Benefits
- • Work 100 % remotely from anywhere in Australia or New Zealand, with flexible hours and a generous home-office setup allowance
- • Competitive salary plus equity in one of the world’s fastest-growing tech companies, with regular refresh grants
- • Annual education and conference budget (AUD $5,000) plus dedicated “Innovation Days” to explore new ideas
- • Comprehensive health and wellness package: medical, dental, mental-health support, and paid volunteer days
- • Relocation assistance if you choose to move closer to an office, plus visa sponsorship for eligible candidates
