Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • Senior Mechanical Engineer at Olix USA Inc. in London, responsible for designing and developing opto-mechanical assemblies critical to the company's Optical Tensor Processing Unit (OTPU) technology, which addresses the growing infrastructure gap in AI-driven computing by delivering unprecedented performance and energy efficiency.
- • Own the mechanical architecture of photonic subassemblies including waveguide coupling structures, precision ferrule systems, laser source packaging, and thermal-mechanical interfaces, ensuring alignment stability from assembly through field life while working at the intersection of mechanical design and optical performance.
- • Perform tolerance chain analysis (RSS and worst-case) for optical alignment budgets, accounting for thermal excursion, assembly variation, and long-term drift, and lead thermal-mechanical co-design of photonic subassemblies including heatsink design for ASICs and high-power laser sources.
- • Select and qualify optical-grade materials such as Invar/Kovar, borosilicate glass, and low-CTE adhesives based on CTE compatibility, outgassing, and process compatibility, and generate and own GD&T drawings and engineering specifications for optical-grade fabricated parts.
- • Collaborate with process engineering, optical design, and reliability teams to define assembly process flows and qualification test plans, and support FEA (thermal, structural, modal) for mechanical validation while contributing to reliability programs involving environmental stress testing per GR-468-CORE, Telcordia GR-326, and IEC 61300 standards.
- • Drive DFM/DFA for precision optical assemblies involving MIM components, laser-machined features, and bonded/co-cured structures, and work directly with optical, process, and reliability engineers to hold the full causal chain between mechanical decisions and optical outcomes.
- • Join a mission-driven company building the next paradigm in computing hardware where light does the heavy lifting, operating at the edge of precision manufacturing to overcome limitations of decade-old hardware blueprints.
- • Work in a high-performance environment with elite hardware (M4 Macs, M4 Pro upgrades), access to rapid prototyping via 3D printing lab, and optimal ergonomic workspaces designed for deep focus and innovation.
- • Contribute to a culture that values work-life balance through chef-prepared meals for late work, caffeine subsidies, and a £24k annual Living-Local Bonus for those residing within 20 minutes of the office.
- • Grow professionally by leading complex opto-mechanical projects from CAD to cleanroom, drawing release to supplier corrective action, and gaining deep expertise in photonic packaging, thermal-mechanical co-design, and reliability validation for cutting-edge optical interconnects.
🎯 Requirements
- • B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, or a closely related field.
- • 5+ years of hands-on experience designing precision opto-mechanical assemblies for production environments.
- • Demonstrated proficiency in tolerance stack-up analysis for optical alignment applications and strong working knowledge of photonic component packaging (VCSELs, PICs, fiber arrays, waveguide couplers).
- • Experience with thermally constrained mechanical design, including CTE mismatch analysis, adhesive joint mechanics, and bonded dissimilar-material structures.
- • Proficiency in 3D CAD (Creo preferred) with GD&T to ASME Y14.5 standards, and familiarity with precision machining, MIM, EDM, laser micromachining, and optical bonding processes.
- • Comfort with basic FEA tools for structural and thermal validation; Green or Black Belt certification preferred.
🏖️ Benefits
- • Competitive salary of £124,000+, commensurate with experience, skills, and location.
- • Meaningful stock options providing equity ownership in the company’s mission.
- • £24k annual Living-Local Bonus for employees residing within 20 minutes of the office to minimize commute and maximize quality of life.
- • Premium healthcare via comprehensive BUPA medical and dental cover, including Medical History Disregarded (MHD).
- • 25 days of annual leave plus all UK bank holidays.
- • Elite hardware including M4 Macs (with M4 Pro upgrades for engineering), high-spec noise-cancelling headphones, and fully ergonomic workstations.
- • Access to a high-performance 3D printing lab for rapid prototyping, experimentation, and personal creative projects.
- • Chef-prepared meals for late work and a tab at a local coffee shop for caffeine on us.
- • Full UK and international visa sponsorship, plus seamless relocation support via a dedicated partner for domestic and international moves.
