- • Senior Mechanical Engineer leading the design and optimization of advanced modular data centers with a focus on two-phase direct-to-chip cooling and dual-use chiller systems for data center cooling and carbon capture.
- • Designing and selecting mechanical components such as coils, heat exchangers, chillers, compressors, pumps, and cold plate systems; evaluating refrigerant impact on data center efficiency.
- • Leading technical reviews of internal and external engineering work, including CFD and FEA analysis; guiding intermediate engineers, drafters, and designers across disciplines.
- • Collaborating with stakeholders to ensure designs meet performance, manufacturability, and deployment requirements; supporting manufacturing operations and evaluating contract manufacturers.
- • Conducting lab experiments to validate cooling system performance and translating experimental data into actionable design improvements.
- • Working within Orbital’s vertically integrated, AI-first industrial environment that combines AI-automated hardware engineering with advanced material science to drive sustainable AI infrastructure.
- • Contributing to Orbital’s mission of advancing critical technologies for a sustainable future through innovation in modular data center design and carbon capture integration.
🎯 Requirements
- • Professional engineering designation with 7+ years of experience in mechanical and/or electrical systems design, selection, or manufacturing for data centers, HVAC, or large-scale cooling applications.
- • Deep understanding of modular data center architecture, including mechanical/electrical subsystems, applicable codes, data center tiers, and best practices for efficiency and reliability.
- • Expertise in chiller and refrigeration system selection, design, and optimization, with proficiency in thermodynamic analysis to maximize cooling performance and energy efficiency.
- • Experience with simulation tools (CFD, FEA) for thermal and fluid dynamics, plus hands-on lab experience designing and executing experiments to validate mechanical and cooling system performance.
- • Ability to interpret experimental data and translate findings into actionable design improvements.
