📋 Description

• As a Senior Software Engineer at Buildout, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our AI deal engine for Commercial Real Estate (CRE) brokerages. You will be instrumental in automating and optimizing every stage of the brokerage workflow, from initial client contact through to commission finalization. Your contributions will empower brokers to focus on building relationships and securing listings, while Buildout intelligently handles the complex backend processes, transforming manual operations into sophisticated, scalable systems. We are seeking an individual who thrives in intricate environments, possesses strong technical acumen, and is driven to make a significant impact by enabling their colleagues and influencing engineering best practices.
• You will consistently and rapidly deliver high-quality software by deeply understanding our customer base and their unique needs. This involves engineering elegant, practical, and robust solutions that not only meet immediate demands but also contribute to the long-term health and maintainability of our platform. Your work will be characterized by a commitment to Buildout Quality, ensuring that every feature and enhancement is polished and performs to the highest standards.
• A core aspect of this role involves making sound technical and architectural decisions. You will be tasked with striking an optimal balance between addressing urgent customer needs and ensuring the long-term viability, scalability, and stability of our systems. This requires foresight, a deep understanding of trade-offs, and the ability to articulate your reasoning effectively.
• Collaboration is key to our success. You will work closely with a diverse range of internal stakeholders, including Product Managers, UX Designers, and Customer-facing teams. Your ability to translate complex enterprise requirements into scalable, efficient, and user-friendly solutions will be crucial. This cross-functional interaction ensures that our engineering efforts are aligned with business objectives and customer expectations.
• You will be a champion for a strong engineering culture at Buildout. This means leading by example through your own work, conducting thoughtful and constructive code reviews, actively participating in pair programming sessions to tackle challenging issues, share knowledge, and foster accountability. Furthermore, you will have opportunities to mentor junior and mid-level engineers, guiding their technical development and helping them grow within the organization.
• You will actively contribute to establishing and reinforcing high standards for code quality, comprehensive testing strategies, and rigorous technical decision-making processes across all enterprise-focused development efforts. This includes advocating for best practices in areas such as test-driven development, continuous integration, and secure coding principles.
• Specifically, you will leverage your expertise in Ruby on Rails to develop and enhance our backend systems. This includes working with standard Rails conventions, as well as specialized tools for design, business logic, and background job processing. You will also contribute to our frontend development, primarily using React and increasingly TypeScript, ensuring a seamless and intuitive user experience.
• Your role will involve working with modern web technologies, including Git for source control, an internally developed design system built on Bootstrap, MySQL for database management, and AWS for cloud infrastructure. You will be encouraged to explore and propose new technologies that can further enhance our platform and development processes.
• The Senior Software Engineer will be responsible for owning complex and sometimes ambiguous problems from inception to delivery. This requires a proactive approach, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to navigate uncertainty to produce high-quality, reliable software. You will be empowered to make significant technical decisions and drive projects to completion.
• You will contribute to the continuous improvement of our testing infrastructure, which includes RSpec for Rails applications and Playwright for end-to-end testing. Your commitment to thorough testing will ensure the stability and reliability of our software releases.

🎯 Requirements

• 5+ years of professional software development experience, preferably in SaaS or enterprise environments.
• Strong proficiency in Ruby on Rails, with a focus on backend development.
• Demonstrated experience in owning and delivering complex, ambiguous problems end-to-end.
• Excellent technical judgment and communication skills, capable of explaining decisions to diverse audiences.
• Proven ability to collaborate effectively and mentor other engineers.
• Experience with JavaScript, React, and modern frontend development practices is highly desirable.
