📋 Description

• Lead the design, development, and delivery of high-impact, scalable services that power the reservation and guest-management experiences for 60,000 restaurant partners and millions of diners worldwide.
• Own end-to-end feature lifecycles—from ideation and technical design through coding, automated testing, deployment, and post-launch monitoring—ensuring 99.9%+ uptime for mission-critical systems that restaurants rely on every minute of every day.
• Collaborate daily with product managers, UX researchers, data scientists, and fellow engineers in fully-remote, cross-functional squads to translate complex business problems into elegant, cloud-native solutions that delight both restaurateurs and diners.
• Architect resilient microservices on AWS (EKS, Lambda, DynamoDB, SQS, Kinesis) and evolve our event-driven, service-mesh architecture to handle 50,000+ concurrent reservations per minute during peak dining hours.
• Champion clean, idiomatic code in Java, Kotlin, or TypeScript; establish and enforce rigorous engineering standards (unit, integration, contract, and chaos testing) that keep our mean-time-to-recovery under five minutes.
• Drive data-informed decision making by instrumenting services with comprehensive observability (OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Grafana) and partnering with analytics teams to surface actionable insights that increase restaurant revenue and diner satisfaction.
• Mentor and level-up a globally distributed engineering team through pair programming, architecture reviews, and career-growth plans, cultivating a culture of psychological safety, inclusive feedback, and continuous learning.
• Reduce technical debt systematically—refactor legacy monoliths into loosely-coupled services, migrate to infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, Helm), and automate security, compliance, and cost-optimization guardrails.
• Partner with restaurant success teams to understand real-world pain points, then rapidly prototype and A/B test features such as dynamic table optimization, wait-list algorithms, and contactless dining flows that directly impact restaurant profitability.
• Contribute to OpenTable’s open-source initiatives and internal guilds (performance, accessibility, and mobile excellence), sharing knowledge and shaping best practices that influence the broader Booking Holdings ecosystem.
• Ensure PCI-DSS and GDPR compliance across all data pipelines, working closely with legal, security, and privacy teams to safeguard diner and restaurant data at petabyte scale.
• Participate in a lightweight on-call rotation (follow-the-sun model) that respects work-life balance while maintaining the high availability our global user base expects.
• Influence multi-year technical roadmaps and OKRs, balancing short-term business needs with long-term scalability, maintainability, and innovation.

🎯 Requirements

• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience building distributed, high-traffic systems in Java, Kotlin, or TypeScript.
• Proven expertise with AWS or comparable cloud platforms, container orchestration (Kubernetes/EKS), and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, CloudFormation).
• Demonstrated success designing RESTful or GraphQL APIs, event-driven architectures, and relational/NoSQL data stores at scale.
• Strong grasp of observability, CI/CD, automated testing, and security best practices in a production environment.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills for asynchronous, remote collaboration across multiple time zones.
