• As a Senior Software Engineer on the Auto Refi + Auto Secured Personal Loans team, you will play a pivotal role in scaling our innovative auto refinance and auto secured personal loan products. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to a highly collaborative environment focused on enhancing customer conversion by minimizing friction and continuously improving product quality.
• You will be instrumental in driving projects across the entire technology stack, from backend services to frontend user experiences. We are seeking a self-starter who is passionate about delivering high-quality, testable, resilient, and maintainable software solutions.

• Collaborate closely with product managers, designers, and other engineers to translate business requirements into robust technical solutions.
• Take ownership of significant features and projects, guiding them from conception through to deployment and ongoing iteration.
• Make critical architectural decisions that enhance the scalability, performance, and maintainability of our platform.
• Propose and implement innovative ideas that directly contribute to improving key team metrics, such as conversion rates, loan volume, and customer satisfaction.
• Engage with stakeholders across the organization to identify and solve complex technical challenges, ensuring alignment with Upstart's strategic goals.
• Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement by participating in code reviews, advocating for best practices, and sharing knowledge with team members.
• Develop and maintain efficient, scalable, and reliable backend services using technologies like Kotlin (Spring) and Ruby (Rails).
• Build intuitive and responsive user interfaces using modern frontend frameworks such as React (TypeScript).
• Design and optimize database schemas and queries for performance and data integrity, working with SQL databases.
• Implement robust testing strategies, including unit, integration, and end-to-end tests, to ensure the reliability of our applications.
• Participate in agile development processes, including sprint planning, daily stand-ups, and retrospectives, to ensure timely delivery of features.
• Mentor junior engineers and contribute to their technical and professional development.
• Stay abreast of emerging technologies and industry trends, evaluating their potential application to Upstart's products and services.
• Drive the technical vision for specific product areas within the Auto Refi and Auto Secured Personal Loans domain.
• You will be a key contributor to ensuring the quality, security, and compliance of our lending products, adhering to industry regulations and best practices.
• Embrace a digital-first, yet intentionally connected, work environment. While we primarily build asynchronously, you will engage in several hours of synchronous collaboration daily via Zoom for pair/mob programming and cross-functional discussions, ensuring tight feedback loops and effective teamwork.

🎯 Requirements

• 6+ years of professional full stack software development experience, with a strong preference for experience with Kotlin (Spring), Ruby (Rails), and/or TypeScript (React).
• 3+ years of professional experience with SQL databases and domain modeling.
• Demonstrated experience with a front-end framework, such as React.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to tailor communication to diverse audiences.
• Proven ability to execute independently and deliver complex projects with minimal direction.
• Comfort and willingness to challenge authority and think like an owner.
