Full Job Description
đź“‹ Description
- • Architect and deliver high-impact interoperability solutions that unlock siloed healthcare data for 30+ million covered lives, directly influencing how payers detect fraud, close care gaps, and personalize member experiences.
- • Own the end-to-end design, development, and optimization of cloud-native data pipelines that ingest, normalize, and stream HL7 FHIR, X12, CCDA, and custom formats at multi-terabyte scale with sub-minute latency.
- • Partner with Product, Implementation, and Customer Success to translate complex regulatory and business requirements into elegant, extensible code—turning HIPAA, HEDIS, and CMS mandates into configurable rules engines that customers can deploy without engineering support.
- • Serve as the technical anchor for cross-functional squads that include data scientists, clinicians, and security engineers; lead architecture reviews, enforce coding standards, and mentor junior engineers through pair-programming and brown-bag sessions.
- • Continuously evolve our interoperability platform by evaluating emerging standards (TEFCA, QHIN, FHIR R5) and open-source tools (HAPI, Apache NiFi, Spark on Kubernetes), then prototype, benchmark, and champion the ones that deliver measurable TCO reduction or performance gains.
- • Instrument every service with observability best practices—distributed tracing, structured logging, and SLO-driven alerting—so that on-call rotations are proactive, not reactive, and MTTR stays under 15 minutes.
- • Collaborate with Security & Compliance to implement fine-grained RBAC, field-level encryption, and automated evidence collection that keeps our SOC 2 Type II and HITRUST certifications evergreen.
- • Contribute to the open-source community by upstreaming bug fixes and new connectors, raising Abacus Insights’ profile as a thought leader in healthcare data interoperability.
- • Drive cost-efficiency initiatives—rightsizing Kubernetes clusters, adopting Graviton-based EC2 instances, and leveraging S3 Intelligent-Tiering—to reduce cloud spend per member per month by double-digit percentages year-over-year.
- • Champion a culture of psychological safety and continuous learning; host guild meetings, sponsor hack-days, and maintain an internal tech-radar that keeps the entire engineering organization aligned on architectural direction.
🎯 Requirements
- • 5+ years of production-grade software engineering in Java, Kotlin, Scala, or Go, with deep expertise in distributed systems and event-driven architectures.
- • Proven track record designing and operating HIPAA-compliant, high-throughput data pipelines on AWS (S3, EMR, MSK, EKS) or equivalent cloud platforms.
- • Hands-on experience with healthcare data standards such as HL7 FHIR, X12 EDI 837/835, CCDA, or DICOM.
- • Nice-to-have: Contributions to open-source healthcare projects (HAPI FHIR, Smile CDR, Apache cTAKES) or active participation in HL7 or FHIR Connectathons.
🏖️ Benefits
- • 100 % remote-first culture with quarterly in-person summits in destinations like Denver, Austin, or Boston.
- • 100 % employer-paid medical, dental, and vision coverage for employees and 80 % for dependents.
- • Annual $2,500 professional-development stipend plus five dedicated learning days to attend conferences, pursue certifications, or complete online courses.
