As a Senior Software Engineer specializing in Rust for Core Engineering, you will be instrumental in developing and enhancing the foundational systems that power our world-class crypto exchange.

• This role is within the Platform and Core Engineering teams, which are the bedrock of Kraken's operations. These teams are responsible for creating systems that ensure Kraken is secure, resilient, and scalable, though their impact is often behind the scenes, measured by the robustness and efficiency of the infrastructure they build.
• You will design, implement, and maintain robust Rust services and foundational libraries. These components are critical for Kraken's core infrastructure, with a strong emphasis on correctness, security, and long-term maintainability.
• Your work will involve writing reusable, testable, and highly efficient code specifically engineered for scale, observability, and operational resilience in demanding production environments.
• You will collaborate on the architecture of large-scale distributed systems. This includes shaping low-latency, fault-tolerant services that are essential for supporting global trading operations and various internal platforms.
• This is an opportunity to work alongside hundreds of experienced Rust engineers, contributing to and upholding a high-bar engineering culture. This culture is grounded in principles of ownership, rigor, and craftsmanship, fostering an environment where technical excellence is paramount.
• As a Senior Software Engineer, you will take on deep systems ownership. This means you'll be responsible for the entire lifecycle of the services and libraries you develop, from design and implementation to deployment and ongoing maintenance.
• You will play a key role in designing shared services, internal platforms, and critical infrastructure that underpin company-wide initiatives. This requires a strategic, architecture-first mindset.
• A significant aspect of this role involves optimizing for safety, scalability, observability, and operational excellence. This is particularly crucial in regulated, security-sensitive, and risk-heavy environments where precision and reliability are non-negotiable.
• You will be expected to apply a solid understanding of distributed systems and related technologies. This includes expertise in areas such as RPC protocols, Kafka, and Event-Driven Systems, enabling you to design and implement scalable and robust solutions.
• Collaboration is key. You will work closely with product teams to thoroughly understand their requirements and constraints, ensuring that the systems you design are appropriate and effectively meet business needs.
• Debugging complex issues across the entire stack – from the operating system and network layers to the application itself – will be a regular part of your responsibilities. This requires a strong analytical and problem-solving ability.
• You will contribute to Kraken's commitment to industry-leading security, crypto education, and world-class client support through the products and infrastructure you help build.
• This is a fully remote position, offering the flexibility to work from anywhere in the world, contributing to a diverse, global team spread across 70 countries.

🎯 Requirements

• 7+ years of software engineering experience, with a significant portion focused on building and scaling complex systems.
• Proven experience in designing, building, and scaling shared systems, internal platforms, or supporting multiple product roadmaps.
• Proficiency in writing network services or asynchronous code in Rust, demonstrating a strong command of the language and its ecosystem.
• A security-first mindset, consistently applying security best practices during system design and implementation to ensure robustness and protect against vulnerabilities.
• Demonstrated ability to autonomously debug complex issues across the full technology stack, including OS, network, and application layers.
• Solid understanding of distributed systems principles and technologies, such as RPC protocols, message queues (e.g., Kafka), and event-driven architectures.
