📋 Description

• As a Senior Staff Machine Learning Engineer in Pricing at tem, you will lead the development of the core pricing intelligence within Rosso, the company's AI-native transaction infrastructure that determines electricity prices for thousands of business customers and directly impacts revenue, margin, and market expansion. Your work will transform a reactive pricing system into a proactive, growth-driving engine that optimizes signing probability, portfolio balance, and commercial outcomes at scale.
• You will own the technical strategy and roadmap for pricing machine learning, defining what to build and how within the pricing engine, while collaborating with software engineers and MLOps to ensure models are production-ready, reliable, and aligned with tem’s mission to rearchitect global energy markets through transparency, efficiency, and AI-driven fairness.
• Day to day, you will design and implement machine learning models for dynamic price optimisation, balancing trade-offs between customer acquisition, portfolio risk, and margin maximisation using first-principles reasoning to select the right approach — whether stochastic programming, classical ML, reinforcement learning, or heuristics — based on problem structure, not familiarity.
• You will develop probabilistic models to manage short- and long-term imbalance decisions, optimising risk exposure across tem’s portfolio in a volatile, high-throughput environment where every inference influences real-time pricing decisions seen by customers.
• You will bridge the gap between modelling and production by owning the data and modelling layer, contributing to system design decisions that affect performance and reliability, and ensuring seamless integration with software engineering teams through clean, production-grade Python and rigorous engineering practices.
• You will communicate complex model behaviour, assumptions, and trade-offs clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders — including product, commercial, and engineering teams — so that pricing decisions are understood, trusted, and acted upon across the organisation.
• You will work in a greenfield, high-impact environment where ambiguity is the norm, applying hard-won judgment from past successes and failures to shape foundational decisions that will compound as tem scales internationally and expands Rosso beyond the UK.
• You will have the opportunity to shape tem’s core intellectual property, directly influencing how electricity is priced and traded at scale, with visibility into billions of transaction value and the chance to prove that AI-driven infrastructure can deliver fair, efficient, and sustainable energy markets.

🎯 Requirements

• Deep experience building ML systems for pricing, revenue optimisation, or decision-making under uncertainty, with a proven track record of taking models from concept to production and delivering measurable commercial impact in real-world settings.
• Strong foundation in stochastic optimisation and probabilistic modelling, with the ability to formulate ambiguous business problems as the right mathematical approach — choosing between techniques like stochastic programming, classical ML, reinforcement learning, or heuristics based on problem structure, not personal preference.
• Proven first-principles reasoning and engineering craft: production-grade Python expertise, a high bar for code quality and system design, and the ability to collaborate as a technical peer with software engineers across the full ML lifecycle, from experimentation to deployment and monitoring.
• Senior technical leadership in ML: experience setting direction for a significant technical area, influencing cross-functional teams, and translating complex model decisions into clear, actionable insights for commercial, product, and engineering stakeholders.
