📋 Description

• As a Senior Staff Machine Learning Scientist, you will stand at the forefront of technical innovation within Monzo, holding the highest position on our Individual Contributor (IC) career track. Your role is pivotal in shaping the foundational ML strategy and the robust platforms that underpin our Operations. You will be instrumental in influencing the design and successful delivery of machine learning solutions that permeate across the entire business, driving significant improvements in efficiency and customer experience.
• You will collaborate closely with senior leadership, engineering teams, and key business stakeholders to meticulously define and execute our long-term machine learning roadmap. This involves not only strategic planning but also hands-on influence over the development of Monzo’s ML capabilities. Your expertise will be crucial in diverse areas, ranging from automating and enhancing customer support interactions to optimizing the efficiency of our operational processes, and pioneering novel AI-driven products designed to deliver superior customer outcomes.
• Beyond your direct technical contributions, you will serve as a vital mentor and guide to the next generation of ML talent at Monzo. Your leadership will be key in elevating the overall standard of ML expertise and practice across the company. Furthermore, you will act as a thought leader, actively shaping and influencing best practices in the development, deployment, and governance of ML models and Generative AI systems at scale, ensuring responsible and effective implementation.
• Your responsibilities will encompass defining and driving the strategic vision for machine learning across the Operations domain and its adjacent business areas. This includes establishing reusable ML architectures and rigorous modelling standards that will be adopted by multiple teams, thereby fostering consistency and efficiency. You will guide the development of complex, foundational systems that serve as the bedrock for numerous products and problem spaces within the company.
• As a senior technical authority, you will be responsible for setting the highest standards and defining architectural patterns for ML implementation across the organization. This involves working cross-functionally with Engineering, Product, and Leadership teams to seamlessly integrate ML-driven solutions into our core business processes, ensuring alignment with strategic objectives and operational needs.
• A critical aspect of your role will be advocating for and implementing responsible AI practices. This means ensuring that our ML models are fair, robust, transparent, and ethically sound, building trust with our customers and stakeholders. You will also play a key role in mentoring and coaching ML practitioners at all levels, cultivating a vibrant culture of continuous learning, innovation, and knowledge sharing.
• You will be encouraged to engage with the broader ML community, sharing your insights and expertise through conferences, insightful blog posts, and potentially contributing to open-source projects, further enhancing Monzo's reputation and fostering industry-wide advancements.

You should possess a proven track record of leading large-scale ML initiatives that have delivered measurable business results, ideally within a fast-paced technology environment. Experience in developing and championing reusable ML modelling patterns, architectures, or infrastructure across large organizations is highly valued.
• Your technical background should include experience in developing state-of-the-art deep learning models, Large Language Models (LLMs), and advanced AI architectures. You must be an industry expert in ML model development, deployment, and MLOps at scale. Proficiency in Python, SQL, and core ML frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch is essential, with experience in microservices architectures being a significant advantage. Experience with real-time ML applications, reinforcement learning, graph-based models, and/or Natural Language Processing (NLP) is also highly desirable.
• The ability to articulate complex ML concepts clearly and concisely to both technical and non-technical audiences is crucial for influencing senior stakeholders and executives. You should thrive in dynamic, ambiguous, and fast-changing environments, demonstrating a proactive and solution-oriented mindset. Your passion for mentoring and ability to elevate the ML skill set across the organization, influencing both cross-functional and executive strategy, will be key to your success.
• Nice-to-have experience includes shaping ML strategy and system design within highly scaling support or operational environments, as well as contributions to industry standards, open-source software libraries, or public thought leadership in machine learning systems.

🎯 Requirements

• Proven track record of leading large-scale ML initiatives with tangible business impact, preferably in a fast-moving tech company.
• Experience developing state-of-the-art deep learning models, LLMs, and advanced AI architectures.
• Industry expert in ML model development, deployment, and MLOps at scale.
• Deep comfort with Python, SQL, and ML frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch); experience in a microservices architecture is a plus.
• Extensive experience with real-time ML applications, reinforcement learning, graph-based models, and/or NLP.
• Ability to communicate complex ML concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences, influencing senior stakeholders and executives.
• Experience leading the development and adoption of reusable ML modelling patterns, architectures, or infra across large organizations.
• Track record of shaping ML strategy and system design in highly-scaling support or operational environments (Nice to have).
• Contributions to industry standards, open source software libraries, or public thought leadership in machine learning systems (Nice to have).
