• As a Senior Staff Software Engineer on the Platform team, you will play a pivotal role in enhancing the resilience, reliability, and scalability of Monzo's core infrastructure and services.
• This is a highly technical, individual contributor (IC) leadership position with company-wide influence, driving technical strategy and execution across multiple engineering collectives.
• You will be instrumental in shaping the future of Monzo's platform, ensuring it can support our ambitious growth and evolving business needs while maintaining cost-efficiency.
• Your primary focus will be on improving platform resilience, acting as a crucial link between platform and product engineering teams to facilitate the creation of robust and dependable systems.
• This involves deep dives into our existing platform, identifying areas for improvement, and architecting solutions that strengthen the reliability surface between teams.
• You will be hands-on, leveraging your extensive software engineering and systems-building expertise to tackle complex technical challenges directly, contributing code and infrastructure improvements.
• Partner closely with the Engineering Director for Platform and other senior engineers to provide technical leadership and strategic direction for resiliency initiatives across the entire organization.
• Develop and champion best practices, patterns, and tooling that make building and operating resilient systems the default and easiest choice for all engineers at Monzo.
• Foster a strong culture of reliability, where every engineer feels empowered and supported to design, build, and operate systems that can perform at a global scale.
• Maintain a broad understanding of various workstreams within the Platform collective, enabling you to offer insightful technical advice and constructive challenges to fellow engineers.
• Lead architectural discussions for the most complex and critical systems within the collective, ensuring solutions are robust, scalable, and optimized for Monzo's unique context.
• Act as a champion for high engineering standards, celebrating team successes while providing actionable, constructive feedback to drive continuous improvement.
• Cultivate a culture of quality and proactive testing, making it easier for teams to implement comprehensive testing strategies.
• Mentor, sponsor, and up-level engineers within the team and across the wider engineering organization, contributing to their professional growth and technical development.
• Contribute to Monzo's open-source efforts, sharing knowledge and best practices with the wider tech community.
• Work with a modern technology stack including Go, Cassandra, Kafka, Kubernetes, Docker, AWS, GCP, React, and Feast.
• Collaborate with a diverse and talented group of engineers, data scientists, and data users, fostering a positive and productive team environment.

• Contribute to the development of internal tooling and dashboards that enhance developer experience and operational visibility.
• Collaborate with product teams to understand their needs and translate them into platform requirements and solutions.
• Drive initiatives to improve the observability and monitoring of our systems, enabling faster incident detection and resolution.
• Contribute to the evolution of our CI/CD pipelines to ensure efficient and reliable software delivery.
• Help shape the technical direction of the Platform collective, influencing architectural decisions and technology choices.

🎯 Requirements

• Significant professional experience in software engineering, demonstrated by writing, testing, and deploying robust backend services using strongly typed languages.
• Hands-on experience working with AWS and/or GCP, and proficiency with Kubernetes, including deep experience designing and maintaining global, resilient systems in the cloud.
• Natural inclination to solve problems through automation and experience with Infrastructure as Code (e.g., Terraform).
• Deep curiosity about systems, enjoyment of diving deep to investigate complex issues, and understanding of how modern distributed applications fail and scale.
• Excitement to build a platform that enables success for everyone at Monzo, focusing on reliability, performance, and developer experience.
• Comfort working in a fast-paced team that deals with ambiguity and evolving requirements.

• Salary: £135,000 - £184,000 per annum
