Kong Inc. is seeking a talented Software Engineer 2, Managed Gateways to join our dynamic team in India-Karnataka. This is a pivotal role where you will contribute to the evolution of our cutting-edge Managed Gateways product, a key growth area for Kong that is already experiencing significant adoption. You will be instrumental in shaping the future of API and AI connectivity, working on the foundational infrastructure that powers modern digital businesses.
• • At Kong, we believe in empowering our engineers. As a Software Engineer 2, you will not only be responsible for developing critical components of our Managed Gateways platform, but you will also take full ownership of major features from conception through to production. This includes designing, implementing, testing, and operating these features, ensuring they meet the highest standards of reliability, performance, and scalability. You will be a key player in driving technical execution within your team, collaborating closely with product managers, architects, and fellow engineers to define and execute the technical roadmap.
• • Our Managed Gateways, including Dedicated Cloud Gateways and Serverless Gateways, are designed to eliminate infrastructure management complexity for our customers. Dedicated Cloud Gateways offer a fully managed, private, and isolated gateway environment, ensuring security and compliance while delivering high performance. Serverless Gateways provide an elastic, fully managed API gateway solution that scales automatically to meet traffic demands without manual provisioning. Your work will directly enable businesses to control traffic flow across their services, deploy APIs seamlessly in serverless environments, and achieve efficient resource utilization.
• • You will be at the forefront of innovation, working with distributed systems, multi-cloud networking, and sophisticated API infrastructure. This role demands a deep understanding of building resilient systems capable of achieving 99.99% uptime SLAs. You will contribute to the operational excellence of our platform by writing comprehensive automated tests, implementing robust observability hooks, and developing tooling to minimize operational toil and enhance system reliability.
• • Collaboration is central to our success. You will work closely with cross-functional teams, including Product Management and other Engineering groups, to deliver new features that empower our customers to build, secure, and manage their APIs effectively. You will also participate in on-call rotations, taking ownership of services in production and actively driving improvements to ensure continuous availability and performance. Furthermore, you will play a role in growing our engineering talent by assisting in the hiring process and mentoring junior engineers.

• • Key responsibilities include designing, developing, and operating highly available distributed systems for Managed Gateways, ensuring resilience against regional and zonal outages. You will own and lead the delivery of key features and modules, guiding them from initial design through implementation and production rollout. Building microservices and control-plane components that power Kong’s advanced gateway solutions will be a core part of your work. You will also partner with Product and Engineering teams to deliver scalable new features that directly enhance customer capabilities in API management. Participating in on-call rotations and driving reliability improvements are essential aspects of this role. Writing automated tests, observability hooks, and tooling to ensure reliability and reduce toil are also key duties. Assisting in hiring and mentoring engineers will contribute to team growth. Contributing to the technical roadmap for Managed Gateways, incorporating ideas from infrastructure, networking, and platform engineering, will be crucial.
