📋 Description

• As a Software Engineer at Griffin Banking Ltd, you will play a pivotal role in building the next generation of financial infrastructure by developing core banking systems that enable innovative fintechs and brands to embed financial products directly into their applications. Your work will directly impact how companies launch payments, card issuing, cross-border transfers, and term deposit accounts—moving away from legacy banking systems toward a modern, API-first, developer-centric platform.
• Day to day, you will design and implement high-throughput reconciliation systems processing millions of Faster Payments transactions, build double-entry accounting ledgers for card spending and settlements, create secure webhook infrastructure with message signing and replay protection, develop API versioning strategies to evolve services without breaking customer integrations, and engineer payment approval workflows that balance user experience with regulatory compliance. You will also write RFCs, build proof-of-concepts, run experiments to validate technical approaches, and refactor systems for maintainability, observability, and scalability—prioritizing long-term system health over short-term deadlines.
• You will join one of seven small, cross-functional engineering teams within the Craft function, each comprising engineers, an engineering manager, and a product manager, working closely with designers. These teams own product areas end-to-end, fostering deep collaboration and shared responsibility. Griffin’s culture emphasizes transparency, autonomy, and asynchronous communication, with a remote-first approach that trusts engineers to manage their own time and environment while maintaining high standards of technical excellence and system reliability.
• In this role, you will grow by owning technical decisions from concept to production, shaping team-wide implementation patterns through code reviews and architectural choices, improving developer productivity via tooling and process improvements (such as reducing build times with Bazel), and mentoring peers through pairing and knowledge sharing. You will have the opportunity to see features through from initial RFC to live transaction—making every design and implementation decision along the way—while contributing to systems that other developers genuinely want to use.

🎯 Requirements

• Strong software fundamentals and distributed systems knowledge, including understanding of consistency models, idempotency, and production failure modes
• Experience working in product-focused, collaborative teams where you’ve shaped what gets built alongside PMs and designers, not just implemented specifications
• Comfort with startup pace and ambiguity—ability to adapt as priorities shift and requirements evolve without needing perfect clarity upfront
• Background in either functional programming (production experience with Clojure, Elixir, Erlang, Haskell, Scala, or Scheme, or substantial personal projects demonstrating deep FP expertise) OR fintech domain expertise (payments, accounts, ledgers, or compliance with money movement, reconciliation, and regulatory requirements)
