  • • As a Software Engineer at Nava PBC, you will be instrumental in modernizing critical government services, directly impacting millions of Americans. You will join small, agile teams dedicated to building scalable, inclusive, and user-centric applications that enhance public access to essential programs and services.
  • • Your role will be deeply involved in the end-to-end development lifecycle, from initial strategy and planning through to implementation, rigorous testing, and ongoing production support. This is a full-stack position with a primary focus on Ruby on Rails, aimed at transforming legacy enterprise platforms into modern, efficient, and user-friendly systems.
  • • You will collaborate closely with government partners and fellow Nava engineers to architect, design, and implement robust software solutions. This includes developing new systems and significantly improving existing ones, ensuring they are not only functional but also accessible, fast, scalable, and secure.
  • • A key aspect of your work will involve contributing to the design and review of well-crafted software, adhering to high standards of simplicity, empathy, and accessibility. You'll be expected to think holistically about engineering challenges, considering the broader impact of your technical decisions.
  • • You will actively participate in an agile development process, efficiently shipping new features that directly address user needs and improve public-facing processes. This requires a proactive and collaborative approach to problem-solving and feature development.
  • • Automation will be a significant focus, as you'll help create and refine tools and processes to streamline our development, testing, and production workflows. This includes implementing best practices for continuous integration and continuous delivery.
  • • You will be responsible for writing and reviewing comprehensive technical documentation, ensuring knowledge transfer and maintainability of the systems you help build. Performing thorough code reviews for your peers is also a vital part of maintaining code quality and fostering a collaborative learning environment.
  • • To ensure the reliability and stability of our deployed applications, you will participate in an on-call rotation. This involves actively supporting production systems and investigating and resolving issues as they arise.
  • • Beyond direct development, you may contribute to Nava's growth by participating in hiring activities. This could include referring promising candidates, conducting interviews, and contributing to debrief sessions, helping to build and strengthen our engineering team.
  • • The position emphasizes a commitment to working on technology that genuinely improves people's lives, understanding that technology is a tool to achieve broader societal goals. You will champion human-centered design principles and modern engineering best practices.
  • • You will be expected to set high standards for yourself and your team regarding code quality, system design, and user experience. This includes a deep understanding of engineering fundamentals and architecture, with a focus on creating sustainable systems that can handle high usage.
  • • The role requires a self-directed individual who can work with minimal supervision, demonstrating initiative and ownership over their work. You should be comfortable working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and adapting to evolving project requirements.
  • • You will be involved in system design, ensuring that front-end and back-end components communicate effectively and that the overall architecture is scalable, available, and performant.
  • • Experience with modern web development frameworks and a strong understanding of testing methodologies, particularly automated testing, are crucial for success in this role.
  • • The level of the role will be determined by Nava leadership based on your experience and skillset, offering opportunities for growth and advancement within the company.
  • • This position is fully remote, offering flexibility and the opportunity to work from various states within the contiguous United States, contributing to meaningful public service from anywhere within our approved remote work locations.
